You don't have to tell people that you are receiving treatment for depression ... and it might be a good idea to be careful who you tell, even amongst friends and family. Of course, if you share the information with some people, you might get more support, which will help you recover more quickly.

You've got no reason to be ashamed ... I would discuss the issue with your doctor/counsellor - they probably would have good advice on who to tell, how much to tell, and what way to tell.

Your health is your business, plain and simple.
If you are in an adult committed relationship your partner probably would be upset that you didn't share such an important health issue hopefully for the fact he cares about you and would want to be a support.
As a teen I would not have shared the info until the relationship was strong and there was trust built up. As for friends they can be gossipy at times! I would probably not share the info unless I thought it would help somebody else. Not out of shame but because I am a private person.

Once you do decide you want to talk about it, you will be amazed at how many other people have gone through a similiar experience! Keep taking your meds and know you are not alone!

Of course, a therapist would tell you it's not good to keep secrets, but you need to have healthy boundaries, too. So, if you're comfortable talking about it, fine -- if not, fine too. You might decide to discuss it one day, or just never tell anyone but Mom. It's your life & you are the Captain :-)

There is a stigma about mental illness, but you are learning first-hand that getting help makes you stronger. You should be proud of yourself for working on getting out of your "deep state." Good luck and God Bless, honey.

i think it's fine if you haven't told your friends that you have to take antidepressants. if they ask, you should probably tell them but it's not a subject I'd purposely bring up or talk about a lot.

taking anti depressants isn't something you should be ashamed of if you need them.
