Tongue thrust is a mouth/facial (orofacial) muscular imbalance that results when someone pushes their tongue forward to swallow (like a baby or young child does). Normally, this form of swallowing usually goes away by the age of 6. When it doesn't, you have tongue thrust which can result in other issues such as orthodontic problems, speech problems, etc.

Causes are thought to be:
heredity
thumb-sucking
medical conditions

Treatment involves:
therapy for tongue thrusting
an oral metal appliance to force the tongue into a normal position
