They say those who can't, teach. I think that is very direspectful.

Just who exactly taught them? Somebody who can't?

I don't know about other fields, but in engineering we have deep respect for engineering professors. We do not look down on them. They tend to be very accomplished and many of them do have "real world" (if you mean corporate) experience.

For those who say, "I thought myself", just who do you think wrote the textbooks?

Institutions of higher education consistently seem to be liberal. I don't think this is an embracing of the Democratic Party, but rather that these people are better educated, open to other ideas, accepting of other opinions and more forward thinking. All traits not very readily embraced by the conservative Republican Party.

Universities and colleges are practically driven into the arms of liberals. Republicans have done little for education and higher learning institutions for decades. Repeatedly we have seen education suffer under the ax of republican budget cuts.

Most recently I think though, that numerous professors, teachers and gifted writers have shown that this "administration" is the worst this country has ever seen. They do so with solid facts, historical proof and sound reasoning. Sure that isn't going over well in the White House. Where learning is a vastly overlooked aspect of character.

Final note to "Robin's Sister": Two quotes to start with you sanctimonious (you might have to look that up) sack of cow flop:

"Journalism is history's first draft." -- Philip Graham

"Those that fail to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them." -- George Santayana

I studied and majored in Journalism and History. I finally went on and earned a MFA in writing at a top university. These "soft" sciences as you allude are solid, respect and defined programs worthy of anyone's efforts. You've disrespected thousands of this country's finest people -- you should be ashamed of yourself on a level I can't even imagine.

How dare you. Stupid, narrow minded, petty and immature thinking like that baffles me.

Because they only take an interest in those people who have actually read a few books and can quote some of the authors writings correctly .

Adam Smith is often misquoted by many who have only skimmed his writings or listened to the rantings of a professor who has not properly read his writings .

Knowledge of how and why things function and work and at what level is important in maintaining a functioning society in which to benefit from .

Many conservatives like liberals get lost along the way and fail to achieve an education .

Because I am in academics myself.
Because I have taught at a major professional school.
Because my spouse is a tenured full professor.
Okay, the sciences have some very brilliant people, and I would qualify that to say that there are many cutting edge research faculty in the sciences. These professors, for some reason, tend to be the conservatives on campus.
The liberal arts professorships (women's studies, English, History, etc.) are rife with incompetence and ideology and the inability to succeed outside of academia.
Also, have you ever been to a teachers' school such as Ball State? It would make you fear for the future.
That is why I gave up my career to teach my kids at home.
Google John Gatto's writings for more from a disillusioned academic who hates academia.

Well I argued and backed down about a half dozen of my college professors easily. They were all just gullible freaks that believed everything they read and I proved them wrong on many cases and I actually had a couple of them apologize to me in front of the whole class.

Well you know how they are, they already have a skewed view of reality.
They think that it is the fault of teachers and professors, when a person gets educated, and becomes liberal.
That is why you always see them crying about "liberal indoctrination" in any school that doesn't teach fairy tales and creationism.
Don't know about anyone else, but if i viewed any instructor that way, i doubt i would take a class they were teaching.

It's probably wrong to label professors in the category of teachers to begin with. Higher education in the US is certainly a cut above - for now. But grade school and high school? Come on! Maybe you can find one good teacher that can actually speak English properly and wasn't hired because of extra credit points for being a minority, i.e., woman, black, Hispanic...

All you need to be a substitute teacher is two years of college in any field. Once you got a foot in the door, the next thing you know a 2 year college art minority is teaching Biology to High School students.

Most are fine. However in any conservative's college career there are always a few liberals who spend more class time spewing Socialism 101 then the subject they are supposed to teach. I never had a teacher spew conservatism 101.

Mine was my Econ 101 professor. This was during Reagan's presidency. He spent maybe 50 minutes of each class on anti-Reaganism, anti-Americanism and pro socialist rants, and maybe about 30 minutes on actual economics. Back then I was too young and stupid to know any better, so just sat there like a sponge. It wasn't until a few years later I had my eyes opened.

what's funny is... they will turn around and say "people are poor because they didn't work hard in school"... right after they talk about how bad the schools are and how they are socialist havens...

are schools good or bad? it seems to depend on whichever point helps the conservative defend his point at the time?

EDIT: and I had a few conservative teachers that "spewed" their opinion constantly too... I don't run around crying about how all colleges are "conservative institutions" because of it though? it's called "life" and it's not always fair...

Here in North Carolina, the largest school system in the state is the Charlotte/Mecklenburg School system (CMS). They have a budget for next year of over 1.2 BILLION dollars. They build $55+ million schools. Over 46% of the students will not graduate. Please tell us the problem...And it ain't Bush telling them they are not doing a good job.

The govenment school systems in this country, on the whole, are failing miserabley. They were that way when Bush took office, they will be that way when the next President leaves office in 5-9 years.
