It's a shame that we as Americans still can't find common ground even in the face of post 9/11 and the current war on terror. What are your thoughts? My thoughts? I'm way beyound sick of racism.

as quiet is kept it never really left the 60's, so many smoke screens and different laws, policies etc. will keep it there for some time to come. what the real shame is that people are blind to what's really going on. the powers that be have a plan that will cut the legs out from beneath many and they won't see it coming.

After the cameras and microphones are gone, the truth of the situation will shake out. We'll not hear about it because those cameras will have left. Whether Jean is a racial situation or not, some people will have learned a little on both sides and maybe make more of an effort at practicing respect for each other. That's the best we can hope for.
Afterthought: Then again, the mayor of that state's largest city (New Orleans) wants to make it a "Chocolate City" and all I see is people trying to explain his remark away by saying "chocolate comes in all colors." Eliminating racism needs to come from the top down, not the bottom up.

I doubt that it will send America back into the 60's as for as racism goes. I hope not for sure.

My opinion on the whole thing is this...

I am a 24 year old White Male who lives in NC. I am not at all racist and I think the white guys who were making racist comments and hanging ropes in trees are as low as a human can get. I also do not believe 6 black guys should get away with beating a single white boy to a bluddy pulp.

I could understand if it were 1 on 1 or 6 on 6 in a fair fight, but they should have never ganged up on 1 guy.

Furthermore, I can absolutely not believe that Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and countless other thousands are marching for these 6 boys who have done this. I can't even come up with a reason in my mind as to what their arguement is?

Is it that the 6 were driven to do what they did because of the ropes? because of verbal attacks? I mean seriously, do they think that it is really ok to excuse these boys for almost killing someone?

Again, I am not racist. I think the Jena 6 should get punished for what they did. I do not think they should spend many years in prison, but at the very least several months in jail as well as a couple years of probation.

Sorry to anyone who may find this offensive. It's just my opinion.

This story will only set race relations back if everyone continues to jump to conclusions. Before everyone is left feeling foolish, now that the circus surrounding this story is dying down, the real story will begin to seep out.

Not only is this town not racist, but Michael Bell is such a bad egg that he has an extensive juvenile record for some pretty violent crimes. Including beating up a female member of his own family. Even with this, he was taken by a white family after his own family threw him out.

The "nooses in the tree" story may be interesting but it turns out that it happened over three months ago, the perpetrators have been punished and it has nothing whatsoever to do with why 6 black kids beat up a white kid.

There is also a valid reason for the prosecutor's and judge's actions. Stand-by.

The real issue is that race relations in Jena haven't changed since the '60's. I live in the area, and I know a few people from Jena. None of these events surprise me.

The best thing that can come out of this is making the rest of America realize that places like this still exist, that racism is not confined to small fringe groups. In many areas, it is still an institution.

Hi Randall M:

I just want to say that I appreciate your candor and your character. I'm a Black man and unfortunately from the media coverage, I myself would be very confused as to why people would be marching for six kids who beat up another kid.

The reason why the march is occurring is for several reasons:

1) Several White students beat up a Black students days prior and there were no repercussions

2) The students (this changed today) who hung the nooses were not punished and the incident was called a 'harmless prank'

3) The student who was beaten up had originally brandished a shotgun when chasing a Black student the day before

4) The six students involved were being tried as adults as opposed to juveniles

Point 4 might raise some eyebrows and get people saying "well, if six people beat up my brother/son/friend, I'd want them tried as adults too!"

And I'm fine with that, but treat all the students the same.

Again, I'm really glad that there are people like you Randall.

God bless you all.

why would it send race relations back to the 60s? Because a gang of 6 black kids beat up a white kid. If anything it shows we are not in the 60s due to the fact that none of the 6 are missing right now. This is ridiculous black and leftists whites are screaming racism when there were 6 blacks who beat up 1 white kid . Imagine how that boy felt getting the **** kicked out of him and for what . We dont know who put the noooses in the trees , regardless of who sits where . not to mention thats high schools everywhere , geeks sit in there prefered spot jocks in theres , preppy kids in theres and yea some blacks and whiteds prefer to stay with their own race so f****** what its not racist to want to eeat with people you comfortable with. However it is racisim and an injustice that this boy gets the **** kicked out of him by 6 people and then 1000s march on the town to free one of them because they dont believe his charge was fair . Its sickening , regardless of race , if the roles were reversed and white people did that , there would be counter marches by the blacks . SO get over your D*** sense of injustuice like white people are the ones responsible for your problems , cause if you and 5 of your friends kick the sh** out of someone you should go to jail .

I believe that it is a two sided issue however I feel that black people are becoming tired of the injustice and the bad treatment. I know slavery is over and everything so I can't really say "we were slaves". However, even to this day black people as well as other minorities are still denied alot of basic freedoms simply out of fear that they will be targeted and hurt. What happened in Jena will likely spark a big race war and I for one applaud it. If whites will not listen to us when we are being civilized and peaceful maybe we should live up to the stereotypes.

I'm wondering how much of this is gang related too but not being admitted yet. Around here, there isn't a lot of racial conflicts (I'm in the semi rural south too) but gang related shootings are up which is extremely unusual for our area.

According to the documentaries I've seen on gangs, most fall within race lines and therefore promote racism.

I'm with you... it's insane that we fight among ourselves while we're under attack from those outside our borders.
