I have been playing D & D for years, and have seen it go through several versions. If I was you I would just get a player's handbook and find a local game to join. Wizards is going to put out version 4.0 early next year, and then you should get at least the core books. Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manual, and Player's Handbook. As far as that goes if you aren't going to be the dungeon master all you would need then is the player's handbook and maybe a book that has unique spell items or a specialized character class. In the future they are going to put a lot of the materials online.

Neverwinter Nights is a very fun PC version. My housemate has just finished it, and then he went and bought the expansion pack for it. Have fun with the game.

My suggestions about D&D - get away while you still can and avoid dungeonmasters at all costs
