The full thing is "If it rhymes with B its I befor E except after C." It only appliesto english so words that arent english it wont apply to.
I think some group of guys went this is too messy we need a rule and we'll change all the spellings to fit it.

English is a Germanic language. German has many ie/ei words. In the mid 1800's Daniel Webster standardized American English with the writing of the first dictionary for America -- Webster's Dictionary. There he standardized various irregular spellings and rules (colour to color, etc....) include ie/ei spellings.

Our linguistics laws are ad lib with not real structure. Our language is just a bunch of sloppiness mangled together to form an a language that we THINK communicates our thoughts and feelings but ends up everyone has a different meaning for everything.

That rule is broken like all the time. What about the word "protein"? The I and the E aren't after a C! I just don't get it!

When colonization was happening, colonist wanted to completely seperate themselves from their european successors. One of the seperation methods was to improve their language. Therefore they created a series of rules for language, many of which don't make sense.

I think it was a bunch of people that got together and said, "hey, let's make spelling 20 times harder than it should be." and now we are living with the consequences. Bastards! I have enough trouble spelling already!
