I wonder that, too - and I also wonder why, if America is the cesspool so many on the left would have us believe, why do so many of these minority immigrants make damned good lives for themselves? Could it be because they're actually willing to *work*, instead of expecting the govt to take care of them?

Ha - how long 'til I'm called a racist for that statement?

Because were a necessary evil. Everyone knows this is a fact, no matter how much you hate the US and no matter how much you talk smack about us Americans the fact remains that we are one of the richest and most productive country in the world. Almost everything that you do in some way can be linked to the US I mean just look at what your doing now your sitting on your computer most likely Windows or Mac both American inventions using the internet another American invention and posting stuff on YA an American website. So no matter how much people hate the US they can never get rid of us because we are too much a part of their lives. You know I'm right you just don't want to admit it.

sigh

Non sequitor much?

A lot of people want to come here, for a number of reasons.

The U.S. COULD be "inherently" racist, and that wouldn't mean no non-WASP would come here. People are lied to about what it's like here; people are fleeing for their lives; people are looking for work.

Is the U.S. "inherently racist"? I'd have to know what was meant by that.

I believe the U.S. was the first place EVER to make slavery a racial thing, and declare that there was no escape; to be born of slaves automatically made one a slave.

In other places that had slavery, it wasn't an eternal thing, as the U.S. definition was.

Race has been a big problem here: near genocide of the people living here when Europeans arrived; enslavement of people based on race; bringing people here in slave-like arrangements to build stuff; rounding up people based on their race (and stealing all their stuff); refusing people the vote based on race, or access to education, jobs, housing, ....

There has been a long-standing problem in this country of denying basic rights to people based on their race.

Does that mean the U. S. is "inherently" racist?

I don't think so. Our history is (among other things), a story of increasing inclusion.

And the people who resist including ALL people as human and citizen.

Why do people come here?

Part of it is PR, with the IDEA that all people here have a chance to live their lives. Ain't necessarily so. (Irish need not apply.)

If you have few choices, you take the choices you can.

I think that the whole world is racist but I think that this country is willing to face it's racism and try to correct it. We don't always succeed but we are trying.

We are also by our own hand a nation of hope. Even the downtrodden from other places in the world feel that they can get a new start here.

We also assimilate people into our culture which is pointed to as a reason why groups like Al Queda have trouble get a foot hold here.

Opportunity. Despite the ills in the U.S. compared to anywhere else the dream still exists in the U.S. Work hard, save your money and offer a service to the wealthy that they don't wanna do for themselves and become rich off of that! Why not come here and be part of having clean hot water. Yes, racism exist but it's not as bad as it use to be. A lot of things are done in the dark and the racists are a monority. So in the past they did it openly because they were a majority in the politics and had nothing to hide. It's different now...Thank God!!!

I live in Europe, and it amazes me how racist people are here. They can get on welfare, but they have no chance to get a job or education which would let them compete with European white collar employees.
For it's faults, America is still the best country in the world, as proved by the massive amounts of immigrants.

The racists in America are a small lot and scattered about the whole country. Immigrants can come here and be legally protected.

I know because this happened to my granparents: they came here for jobs and the opportunity to make money. I'm sure that the majority of immigrants would love to return to their homeland, but financial opportunities aren't that good. The other immigrants come to escape oppressing governments. All in all, I'm sure that in every immigrants eyes the "American Dream" is all about money, not the "utopian" society of this country.

Its one think to be treated differently in a society as opposed to being slaughtered in the streets by the thousands every week .

So people of color regardless of the racism here still come because it beats a machete to the head or a bullet .

We aren't inherently racist--certainly no moreso than many other countries. However, even if we were? A racist USA would still be much better than many countries from which people are emigrating.

Many people have far more significant issues than racism to concern them.
