I had my 98 Mercury Tracer read and it said it was the o2 sensor since my check engine light went on. I replaced that today along with the plugs and the fuel filter. It idles great now, but it still lags on starting. It tries but doesn't catch, then starts on the second try. Do I need to wait a couple of days for sensor to take or could there be something else even if it didn't read a problem?

It is something else, since oxygen sensor will not affect starting. When the engine started, the computer will ignored reading from oxygen sensor until it is warmed up (it is called open loop). Also sensors do not need to break in like wait couple of days.

An O2 sensor code just indicates the exhaust mix is incorrect. It could be a bad sensor. It could be a faulty plug or plug wire. It could be a sticking injector or dirty air filter. There are any number of things that could trigger the O2 sensor.

Usually it takes a couple of days for the CPU (Central Processing Unit) to readjust to the changes you described. That might or might not correct the hard starting problem.

The sensor could have become faulty as a result of a problem. A classic is over rich fuelling or lack of spark in a cylinder is causing unburnt petrol to flow out of the exhaust system. Silicon is a known to damage O2 sensors. Poor quality petrol or gasket sealant used before the O2 sensor could cause this. Also it could be coolant present in the exhaust gas.

There are multiple O2 sensors in a vehicle. I've been told by an auto shop that Fords can have up to 7 O2 sensors in them. Also, you may just need to have the codes reset in the ECU.

if the check engine light indicate there is a o2 sensor system malfunction, it does not mean the sensor is bad. it could be a vacuum leak, exhaust leak, or electrical problem. take your vehicle to a professional repair shop to get it fix before you cause more damage or wasting money. in this case, you just waste your money on the oxygen sensor for nothing.

Why did you change the O2 sensor and which one? What were the codes?
Did a shop do the diagnosing or did Auto Zone or other parts store? The Codes point in a direction to start diagnosing, not the diagnosis itself.
