Republicans stand for a mix of religious fundamentalism and social Darwinism.
Social Darwinism, term coined in the late 19th century to describe the idea that humans, like animals and plants, compete in a struggle for existence in which natural selection results in “survival of the fittest.” Social Darwinists base their beliefs on theories of evolution developed by British naturalist Charles Darwin. Some social Darwinists argue that governments should not interfere with human competition by attempting to regulate the economy or cure social ills such as poverty. Instead, they advocate a laissez-faire political and economic system that favors competition and self-interest in social and business affairs. Social Darwinists typically deny that they advocate a “law of the jungle.” But most propose arguments that justify imbalances of power between individuals, races, and nations because they consider some people more fit to survive than others.
Social Darwinism's philosophical problems are rather daunting, and fatal to it as a basic theory (though some have applied similar ideas). First, it makes the faulty assumption that what is natural is equivalent to what is morally correct. In other words, it falls prey to the belief that just because something takes place in nature, it must be a moral paradigm for humans to follow.
This problem in Social Darwinist thinking stems from the fact that the theory falls into the "naturalistic fallacy", which consists of trying to derive an ought statement from an is statement. For example, the fact that you stubbed your toe this morning does not logically imply that you ought to have stubbed your toe! The same argument applies to the Social Darwinists' attempt to extend natural processes into human social structures. This is a common problem in philosophy, and it is commonly stated that it is absolutely impossible to derive ought from is (though this is still sometimes disputed); at the very least, it is impossible to do it so simply and directly as the Social Darwinists did

As a Republican I would like to answer your questions, You ask why they are against free health care, There is no such thing as Free anything, someone is paying for it, The Gay Rights issue, I am like Millions of other americans, Democrat, Republican and Independent that believe in God and the Bible. Are you asking me to go against what the Bible says about the Gay issue. The Welfare question, Welfare is being abused by Millions of people. The Tax question, I have paid taxes all my working life and I don't get any Special treatment because I'm a Republican. The Social Security question, The Democratic congress has robbed the money out of the Social Security Trust Fund several times in the past and never replaced the money they took. The Veteran Benefit question, The Democrats are the ones that have cut and want to cut Funding to the Military, Check out what Bill Clinton did to the Military Funding. The Special Treatment for Minorities and Poor People, Read the Following by Bill Cosby, he explaines it better than i can.
"They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English. I can't even talk the way these people talk:
Why you ain't,
Where you is,
What he drive,
Where he stay,
Where he work,
Who you be...
And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk.
And then I heard the father talk.
Everybody knows it's important to speak English
except these knuckleheads. You can't be a doctor
with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth.
In fact you will never get any kind of job making a decent living. People marched and were hit in the face with rocks to get an education, and now we've got these knuckleheads walking around.
The lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal.
These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids. $500 sneakers for what ? ?
And they won't spend $200 for Hooked on Phonics.
I am talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit.
Where were you when he was 2 ? ?
Where were you when he was 12 ? ?
Where were you when he was 18 and how come you didn't know that he had a pistol ? ?
And where is the father ? ? Or who is his father ?
People putting their clothes on backward:
Isn't that a sign of something gone wrong?
People with their hats on backward, pants down around the crack, isn't that a sign of something ?
Or are you waiting for Jesus to pull his pants up ?
Isn't it a sign of something when she has her dress all the way up and got all type of needles [piercing] going through her body?
What part of Africa did this come from??
We are not Africans. Those people are not Africans; they don't know a thing about Africa .
With names like Shaniqua, Taliqua and Mohammed and all of that crap, and all of them are in jail.
Brown or black versus the Board of Education is no longer the white person's problem.
We have got to take the neighborhood back.
People used to be ashamed. Today a woman has eight children with eight different 'husbands' -- or men or whatever you call them now.
We have millionaire football players who cannot read.
We have million-dollar basketball players who can't write two paragraphs. We, as black folks have to do a better job. Someone working at Wal-Mart with seven kids, you are hurting us.
We have to start holding each other to a higher standard.
We cannot blame the white people any longer."

Free health care? Most Reps are all for giving a hand up, but making it a permanent part of life is only putting a burden on American tax payers. People are no better than my husband and myself to work hard and purchase their own insurance. Gay rights? Most Reps for the most part are Christians and God's word says that Homosexuals will not inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. The bible speaks ill of homosexuality many times. Welfare? As I said, you're no better than I to work hard and support yourself. Taxes? My husband and I pay boo coos of taxes every year. Social Security? Can you show me your proof that we're against SS? That's a new one on me. Veterans benefits? Under this administration my cousin has gotten a raise 3 times, although, I agree our Vets deserve a whole lot more. Special treatment...? My mother is Native American, very educated, but grew up poor and discriminated against. She's a success and never felt like anyone owed her anything and doesn't blame white people for her problems. She's a proud Republican.

In deciding the presidential candidate, there will be primaries. Depending on the state, they might be closed primaries (only members of the political party can vote) or open primaries (Independents, but not the opposite major party, can join members of one of the political party primaries). In 2012, here is how the primaries are set up: 1) February 6, 2012-March 5, 2012 (Early States) -Feb 6: Confirmed date of Iowa Caucuses -Feb 14: Expected date of New Hampshire primary -Feb 18: Confirmed date of Nevada Caucuses -Feb 28: Confirmed date of South Carolina primary 2) March 6, 2012-March 31, 2012: Primaries (and other contests) that provide for proportional allocation of delegates to the candidates, and all nonbinding caucuses 3) April 1, 2012-end of primaries: all other contests The winner is awarded pledged delegates to the Republican National Convention (which will take place in Tampa, Florida during the week of August 27th) unless if said candidate withdraws (and then they usually support the winner). Next year, it looks like some states are going for proportional representation instead of the traditional winner-take-all model. The one with the majority (not plurality) of delegates wins the nomination.

The traditional answer is that Republicans stand for a smaller, more efficient government, greater civil liberties, lower taxes and personal freedom more than government entitlement.
Unfortunately the current President has been spending money and expanding government in a very un-Republican way. Parties may have an official platform, but you really don't know what an individual will do until you can see their record.

Here is a suggestion, then come back to your own question. Do a search on these subjects and really read exactly what each of the members of Congress has to say on each subject. Not what you hear they have said. Make a list of Republican answers and Democrat answers and see which one is really against and which one is good at making you think they are for.

Ideology not party is what matters. Today's Republican Party is dominated by southern, neo-confedeate, conservatives.
The difference between the left and the right comes down to equality. The more left-wing a person is the more likely they want equal treatment/opportunity/income/etc and the more likely they are to believe that people despite some differences are much more alike then different.
The more right-wing a person is the more likely they are to believe that certain groups of people are superior to others based on their nationality, ethincity, gender, sexual orientation, and social class. That explains cons ultra-nationalism and lack of respect/hate for mexicans, the french, poor people, gays, etc.
Of course, nothing is black or white. You got shades of gray between the extremes.

They believe that business and free trade are so efficient that they can provide all the solutions to our needs in the most efficient way.
...despite the overwhelming evidence that unrestrained capitalism has created great abuses against the public on many many occasions in our history.
Anything that does not come from free trade is "communism" and stealing from their pockets. Even taxes - which governments have collected since the bogs of time. Any functions performed by a government are wasteful (even roads, food inspections, and schools) except the military.
Despite the fact that they make use of public services like the rest of us, they are convinced that they are Personally Responsible for all of their own sustenance and livelihood.
