My grandfather gave to every charity that could get near him. He was on a fixed income as well, and when he died my aunt wanted to stop payment on several checks he'd sent out to "charities" - 700 Club, etc - that she considered scams. My mom's opinion, and it really stuck with me, was that he felt good about giving the money, and it was what HE wanted to do with HIS money, so who are we to judge it? Whether the money went to help others or not, my grandfather felt that he was helping others less fortunate than him, and it made him happy to be able to do so. Almost every check written out of his account was to a different charity. I really felt like I got to know him better after he'd passed and we were going through his stuff, and it was nice to know what a generous and caring person he was.

Unless he's just absolutely driving himself into the poor house, maybe you should just let him be. At 94 years old, he probably doesn't have too much to get excited about some days, and the money may be well spent if it makes him feel good to help others, whether the money really goes to help them or not.

I'm also an Army wife, btw, so tell him thanks for supporting our troops!

It seems many of the veteran charities are mismanaged, or at least from their own records. It would be best to research any before sending them funds. Many agencies do not handle their funding this poorly. If he wants to contribute to causes helping the veterans, he would be better off doing it directly to an agency locally, like a veterans home or hospital.

The sad thing is that many of those organizations spend 80% of what they make to raise MORE money; there used to be some website that showed what % of the money raised is used for administrative costs and how much actually gets to the needy (in this case, disabled vets or whoever) but, sorry, I don't have the website anymore.

OH yeah.. That is the VFW and they raise money for other veterans of foreign lands. If you have been in the US military and served on foreign soil, you can be a part of the VFW or be related to someone that does.

I am a VFW member. My father served in Germany and my grandfather was a submarine captain in WW1.
