All of these posts are incorrect. Serbia was definitely an independent state, but was not an ally of Austria-Hungary. They were rivals for control of the Western Balkans. Serbia was autonomous since 1804 and gained full independence in the 1870s. Then in 1912-13 Serbia regained the remaining territories under Ottoman occupation. Austria-Hungary perceived Serbia as a threat to Austro-Hungarian ambitions in the Balkans and to the empire itself. There were very large Serb minorities in Austria-Hungary in the regions of southern Hungary (now northern Serbia), what is today Croatia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Furthermore, Serbia had aspirations of liberating other southern Slavs under Austro-Hungarian domination such as Slovenes and Croats and incorporating them into the new state of Yugoslavia (Land of the South Slavs).

Short answer, Austria-Hungary controlled Serbia. There were independence groups in Serbia, and this is the catalist for WW1.

Russia vows to protect Serbia (secretly), France and England are in an alliance with Russia.

Austria-Hungary was aligned with Germany and Italy.

Serbian terrorist group (Black Hand) kills heir Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie (Princep is the assassin), WW1 boils over.

While the assassin isn't quite the cause of WW1. The entire region was waiting for a war. It would be "some damned thing in the Balkans." I forget who said that.

Some reasons for WW1 (I forget the rest):
- Entangling Alliances
- Militarism
- Nationalism

by ww1 the austro-hungarian empire was on a steep decline. much of the balkan wars was to expel the Empire as their rulers. though serbia did not win independence the austro-hungarian empire lost all control over the balkans by 1913.
serbia was allied with the russians and had military protection from britain and france.
