I noticed my wifes KIa spectra was making a clicking racket when she turned sharp in to front end.. I checked it closer and noticed the cv boot on the driver side was torn and the noise was coming from the outer joint.. My question is . should I replace the whole shaft assembly on that side our a CV kit for the outer joint.. what is my best option for this project..

2001 kia spectra ..

In the long run it will be cheaper to replace the whole axle. If you are mechanically inclined I would recommend doing it yourself and finding a local axle rebuilder and have them do it for less.

There are NO benefits to changing to CV joints. Not even better turning. Your turning radius is limited by the tires rubbing against the inside of the body NOT the U joints on the axleshafts. CV joints are about 1/5th as strong as a Ujoint under 4X4 stresses and cost 5 times as much if not more.

If the shaft is making noise, it needs to be replaced. If you had caught the torn boot before it started making noise, just replacing the boot should be sufficient.

Whether replacing the boot or the entire shaft, the shaft has to be removed. Be sure to put a pan under the trans because you will loose some trans fluid when the shaft is removed.

If the CV shaft is making noises, it is too late to repair it with a cv boot kit. You will have to replace the shaft. The shafts run about 60 dollars at most auto parts stores.

Replacing the axle is the fastest repair and requires no special tools. This is what I would do.

To replace the boot you will need a boot installer kit and it can get messy with the grease.

either way the steering assembly will need to be taken apart.
after that, to replace the axle is simply popping it out of the transmission.

the cost either way is about the same at a shop.

Replace the shaft, because replacing the boot is not going to solve the problem and you probably don't have the proper equipment to replace the boot. It looks easy, but in reality it's not. When I tried replacing the boot I became so frustrated that I ended up replacing the Shaft anyhow.

a remanufactured shaft is the best way to go, easier to replace and not very expensive. your only other option would be to replace the outer joint, CV kits only contain a boot and grease, noisy joints have to be rebuilt.

Most times it's easier to replace the whole axle assembly. In the long run, gonna save you a lot of time, and probably not be much price difference. Especially if you're going to do the work yourself.

Replace the entire shaft assembly. They can be a pain to replace if you don't have the right tools. If one is gone, the other may not be too far behind.

Replace the whole driveshaft as it is as difficult/ labour or less than replacing just the boot. Just the part is more expensive. Plus if it is as you describe it needs replacing anyway. In your situation replacing the boot and grease might not make a difference.
