ahhh, you mean they are a tool of repression and fear, and serve to threaten a group of people into submission? But I thought it was just a rope? No harm done? WELL, I am much better educated NOW, thanks!

OK, so if someone holds a gun to my head (another tool for taking someone's life) I should just assume it is a prank, and harmless? Kids are being cute, by threatening someone's life? Is that your reasoning? Is that how you would respond if it was YOUR child who did this? I certainly hope you would be a better parent than to make excuses for criminal and threateneing behavior...

In the south during the Jim Crowe days groups like the KKK would show up in the middle of night, drag blacks from their homes and hang them for such Henious crimes as talking to a white woman....... the nooses were hung in conspicuous places around town to remind the blacks to mind their place....

It is a symbol of racial hatred, just like a burning cross.

Now, for those who would suggest that this is no big deal (conservatives, I would assume), let me remind you that you CANNOT have it both ways.

On the one hand, you have such heavy emotional attachment to the flag (another political symbol). God forbid anyone should do anything disrespectful to it. I don't promote that, I'm just saying...

So, in other words, SOME symbols have a lot of heavy meaning attached to them....but something like a noose doesn't????

As I said, you cannot have it both ways.

Either these things are metaphors for intense emotions or they are just......things.

I'm in my early 30's. My father was one of the first chiefs of staff to hire black orderlies at a major metropolitan hospital. I clearly remember rocks being thrown through our window, harassing hate mail and blockades on my driveway (this is no less than 25 years ago - and I repeat - I am not talking about the deep south). These were orderlies - not nurses, not doctors but one rung above janitors. Children would not talk to me at school, parents would point and we were treated like the plague.

It's the symbol of a violent racist past.
I don't really care to give people who don't understand why that's a big deal a History lesson.Chances are they live in their own reality, deny;minimize or question the relevance of History on events today.
There's only so much ignorance I can take

Well you know they used to lynch people back many years ago .. especially in the south.. Many Hate crimes were commited, and many were toward black people.. I guess these young white boys thought it was cute to pull this prank as a reminder of those days.. tasteless yes, but harmful no.. They were suspended by the school for doing it.. To me if the Sharpton and Jackson crew really had sense they would dismiss the act as stupidity that doesnt deserve attention.

Is about what symbolizes. The students that put it there knew what they were doing. Haven't you seen the pictures with blacks hanging from trees in the 30s? I don't approve of what the six black students did but to be charged with attempted murder is ludicrous. The victim went to a party after being beaten!

Google up the lyrics for the song "Strange Fruit"

You will understand why a noose is such a big deal.

it brings back memories of when white people went around hanging blacks just because they were black.
It does not give anyone the right to take the law into their own hands and physically attack another, especially over a month after the incident, and a SIX on one beating. This is mob action and all should be incarcerated.

How about a question with a question. Why is it ok for six black guys to jump one white guy but not ok for six white guys to jump one black guy?

I think there is racism here, but the situation needs to be flipped.
