Heres a question:

Are you also guilty for not reporting this to someone ?

This is one of the hardest situations to be in. Having the knowledge that something like this is happening to a good friend or relative, but being basically unable to do anything about it.
You can report it to the authorities, however, unless the individual themself is willing to press charges then there is little the law can do based on third party information.
Is this individual willing to take action? What type of abuse are we talking about, verbal, physical, sexual, there are several types. How old are the two people involved? How long have they been married? How long have they known each other?
As a friend the most you can do is let her know that you are there for her, advise her to take action and offer her a place of safety if needed.
There are a number of support groups and places for her to get information and advice. Try to get her there.
Most people who are in abusive situations have very low self-esteem or feel that they have done something to deserve the abuse. She needs you to build her up and let her know that what she is going through is not normal or right and that she does have options and can take back control of her own life.
But until she is ready to accept those things there is little you can do except be there.

Listen to Arthur. He knows what he is talking about.

Please remember that sometimes people are sick, and they get involved with others who are sick, too. Unless this woman who is being beaten actually DECIDES to do something about it and ask for help, there is not much others can do for her. Some people are so emotionally ill that they feel like they deserve this kind of life, so they don't tell others about it. This is sad but true.

Abuse and violence are terrible things, and unfortunately more common than we wish... Your friend must be terrified of this man and with just cause...BUT SHE has to take a stand and choose to protect herself ASAP ! I hope there are no kids involved. Try to convince her to contact her family or close friends and help her get away from this man before it's too late...!

Abuse ....yes.......Unfortunately third hand accounts don't stand up in court......Your friends needs to be a friend to this lady......And part of being a good friend in that situation is to be a listening ear, give good advice, and don't spread the lady's private business community-wide! If it becomes a topic of gossip, however well-meaning, the lady concerned may retreat into a shell and her abuser will have succeeded in further isolating her.....Ultimately unless the abused person is prepared to leave the situation for their own safety, and/or report the abuser to the police, there is nothing more your friend can do.

You can call Sojourner House at 401.861.6191 or the National Domestic Violence Hotline anytime at 800.799.SAFE (800.799.7233). Be careful not to tip off the husband because something will happen. She has to escape without tipping him off or stay and walk on eggshells. The time when a woman leaves her husband will be the most dangerous time... Then if she wont, you need to contact the authorities onher behalf and tell them what is going on.She will still need to file charges on him but at least the beatings will stop if you do the calling and she signs the complaint form. You can also contact a local womans help group to help her in this situation but something must be done quickly before something really bad does

have you ever watched the Oprah special where they had that one lady whose son was video tapping while the dad was beating the moms butt?

Tell your friend to document each and every single time on a calendar, and to make it a point to document if there was anything used to beat her with i.e. shoe, belt, spoon ect. ect. anything at all. Then to make a plan with her friend and use code words that they only understand. I hope this helps if not please go on the Oprah website and look for that episode.
