I see nothing wrong with Halloween for Christians. You're right: Other "Christian" festivals share dates or some history with pagan celebrations, including December 25, which was Saturnalia for the Romans. The gift-giving, tree in the house, and mistletoe, all are pre-Christian traditions. Even Easter symbols are from pre-Christian times: the rabbit and the egg.

The person above needs to read books about origins of celebrations. The tree goes waaaaay back, beyond the yuletile tree, back to Norse mythology, where the kiss beneath the mistletoe started. Trees have always been viewed as having spirits, long before the Druids; actually, more is made up about the Druids than is known for sure about them. Human sacrifice anywhere is rather a ridiculous notion to me. Have you been watching "Race With the Devil" or other such B movies? The ancient Greeks believed in spirits in nature, so who knows how far back some of these beliefs go? The ancient Greeks also had a belief in a day in which the doors to the afterlife opened, and the spirits walked about. People stayed indoors and left gifts of food and drink on the step or away from the house to sate the wandering wraiths.

So, unless they want to banish the rest of the shared holidays...

I agree that very few people out there celebrating Halloween are "worshiping the devil". I'm not sure how they can look at the happy children dressing up and having fun as anything bad. Even for adults, it's fun to dress up and go to parties, parades and costume contests, whether with their children or on their own. Did you know that, at one time, people would dress in devilish attire to mock him? They weren't honoring; they were making light of the devil, Satan or whatever other name he is called.

Are people going to ban all bonfires? Most have a pagan connection. Next, we round up rabbit feet keychains and take Lucky Charms off the shelf. Oops! There's more superstition! We have to get rid of Count Chocula and Booberry. I'm being silly here, but where does it stop? Superstitions are pagan, too, aren't they? However, some did spring up through Christianity, so it could be tricky to separate them. I saw a program the other day, explaining how many superstitions came into being. Some "pagan" notions actually originated around the beginnings of Christianity.

Sorry. I "talk" too much!

I am a Christian and yes I dress up and participate in Halloween. I dont do it as worship to the devil or to celebrate peganism.

I think that the pegan stigma of Halloween is silly. It is a time to act goofy and dress up and have fun with your kids. By doing what we do, we squash the old stigma of Halloween and create a new tradition.

Things in this world are only evil if we let them be evil.

The surest defense against Evil is extreme individualism, originality of thinking, whimsicality, even-if you will-eccentricity. That is, something that can't be feigned, faked, imitated; something even a seasoned imposter couldn't be happy with. -Joseph Brodsky, Commencement Address, Williams College, 1984

I am a Christian, and I don't celebrate Halloween; as cheesy as it sounds, my church has a big party (with games and candy, of course) on Halloween night celebrating a new harvest, and all that God has given us. No, those Christians that say it's a Pagan, Devil-worshipping holiday are not just paranoid. I saw a Christian documentary once called "Trick or Treat?", and it talked about how, in MANY countries all over the world, hundreds of innocent children are sacrificed in demonic rituals on Halloween night. It even had a testimony of a man who was part of one of the rituals when he was a child, who had to witness his friend be killed.
It's not bad to get candy and dress up, but DON'T celebrate the real meaning of the holiday. Also, do you really think Jesus would want any of His children to have fake skeletons and tombstones as decorations on this day? (Notice I called it 'day' rather than 'holiday.' Holiday literally means 'holy day', and Halloween couldn't be farther from Holy!)

I think it depends on WHY you're doing it. Dressing up in costumes can be fun, but certain things are borderline, and (don't remember the exact wording) "You should not have even the appearance of unrighteousness" (Biblical ref.: will look up later and repost.)

However, Christmas was not based on pagan holidays, but was rather celebrated when it was to hide from persecution. Some of the symbols, however, were taken from pagan religions. The tree, for example, was used to celebrate the Winter Solstice, because it appeared alive during the winter. Ressurection Sunday, or as most call it, Easter, has some pagan symbols for the same reason.

So, I would say, just be careful with your intent. Halloween WAS a Druid holiday, and most things people do for the holiday have connections to that. (Jack-o-lanterns were to symbolize loyalty to the Druid god, so that one's children would not be kidnapped and sacrificed)

Hellooo Mrs. Efron...if you are a Catholic then you are a Christian!! Christians believe in Christ.

As far as halloween being anti-Christian, if you CHOOSE to make it all about Satan and evil and horror, then that is what it will be to you. If you choose to make it just fun and frolic, then that's what it is. It's all a matter of opinion and attitude.

I am a Christian and I have always celebrated Halloween for what it is..just plain, old fun!

I agree- I have always thought that the Christians who are biased against Halloweenare hypocrites for this. Traditions of Christmas and moreso Easter are from pagan celebrations.

I personally wasn't allowed to go out as a child for halloween and I understand why my parents did what they did and I respect that they did what they thought was best.

I, as a new and parent am indecisive still; I understand what people from both sides are saying. I however am unsure about what I'm going to do.

I think you should just do some research and do what you feel you should do. (Like listening to your conscience.) Thats what I'm going to do.

glad to see someone else has done some homework on "christian" and "non-christian" holidays.

It's all just stereotypes these days and ignorant people feeding them. But I enjoy the fun of it all.
