The May 2012 eclipse is an ANNULAR eclipse, not a total eclipse. The Moon will be too far from the Earth to completely cover the Sun, leaving a ring (annulus) of sunlight all around. This is enough to kill things like the diamond ring, Bailley's beads, and the corona, the main reasons people go to eclipses. The next TOTAL eclipses in North America are in 2017 and 2024. The first makes a diagonal stripe from Oregon to North Carolina; the second crosses the Great Lakes and comes down the St. Lawrence Valley. The maps below shows the paths of these eclipses. Remember, you have to be right on the path to see anything.

It's in the southeast. However, it is often called part of the south because it was one of the confederate states during the Civil War between North and South in the 1860's. During March Madness at NCAA Basketball Tournament time, North Carolina is often considered part of the East.

Nope. North Carolina is southeast.

US states that would be considered Southwest are New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and California. Also Utah, Colorado, Texas, and Oklahoma might or not be be included, depending on your definition.

Strictly speaking, depending on how far you want to take the definition of "southwest," Hawaii counts as well.
