I used to know someone who was a merc. He'd typically get about $600,000 for three months "work." The boy is just not right with the world. Haven't seen in almost ten years.
What countries? I only know of one and it IS not up for discussion.
Jobs? It was to kill. What would you expect? Shake hands and kiss?
Death rates? Last I knew he was still alive (sort of). Their deaths rarely ever get noticed. I doubt statistics are kept.
They are an asset in that your citizens won't be required to shed their own blood. You should look up the French Foreign Legion.
Previous wars? Just about every war ever fought has utilized the services of these people.
My friend had a quite a stock pile. Claymores, hand guns of various caliburs, you name it. It was actually kind of scary.
My opinion? He once asked me to join him.. He was planning a one way mission (for himself). I already have enough demons. I don't need to add to the nightmare. Most of those guys have at least one screw loose. Their only true loyalty is to money. And at that point, you cannot trust them. Who's to say that they didn't sell out to a higher bidder and not bother tell you? It's not hollywood and the movies. People REALLY do die.

There are no mercenaries.
Mercenaries haven't been used in a conflict in over 30 years.
Security guards are not mercenaries.

Mercenaries throughout history have never been paid well, they were usually hired for the spoils that they could get, in the eighties, when I was a e4 in germany, i met some brit mercs who couldnt believe that I got paid so much, they were from africa and made about 400 a month, but times have changed and the money available for dirty work is never ending, The US doesnt have mercenaries, we have Government Contractors, a much better term, and they are used to prrovide security and do things that are sometimes outside the military's rules of engagement, however, can suffer severe penalties from both the US and the host country of operation, as far as jobs for mercs, they are limitless, anything from any military's combat arms and combat support teams. Mercenaries are usually left to fend for themselves as they cannot rely on anyone to back them up and its not the US military's job to do so, the pay over seas now ranges anywhere from 85K on up, depending on your background and skills, the pay is worth the risk to many, and there is a never ending supply of men and women trying to get those type of jobs, in Afghanistan, the taliban was hiring Chechnyan mercenaries and placing a bounty on the life of a soldier, I believe the rate was 1000 dollars per death, more for a female, and the price on my commanders head was 25000 in my district, as far as weapons, they are usually armed to the teeth, and ready for anything, but again, it depends on the mission and area of operations, as far as my opinion on having mercenaries, every government on the planet has them, they are just named differently

If you are asking how much private security people earn in Iraq - around $600 per day for a person with elite military experience.
