the U.S. I doubt very seriously that the VAST majority of Americans want to listen to the diatribes of a person who espouses the total destruction of Israel and a theological takeover of the world. This is the same University that shouted down the Minutemen who help patrol our borders against ILLEGAL aliens which most folks think is a good thing. Where is the common sense in that place????

I do not take issue with free speech. I take issue with the necessity to invite a person of very questionable theological asperations to speak to college students that are in the process of forming opinions that will shape a lifetime of decisions that will affect us all. I am certain having Hitler speak at a major universtiy in this country in 1943 would have been frowned upon. To know evil in this world, I don't believe it is necessary to hear from Satan about the benefits of a contrary lifestyle. This is all transpiring in a country where the major networks don't believe its a good thing to show the planes destroying the World Trade Center too many times because it will unsettle the populace. Denying reality while at the same time inviting a jihadists to speak doesn't seem to make much sense.

Is there a problem with diversity. I'm not saying this is a good man. What I am saying is him speaking at an American university is not the end of the world. At least he isn't running his mouth at Ground Zero. It is a university. A place of many thoughts, ideas, and opinions. I don't understand this need to shut everyone up.

The reasons are called academic freedom, free speech, and intellectual curiosity. Columbia also happens to have a speakers series on world leaders and Ahmadenijad, like it or not, is a world leader. Not to worry, most American's won't see or listen more than a sound bite or two from him; this is a university event.
I bet you didn't complain when Ahmadenijad was interviewed for on 60 Minutes. Millions of Americans watched an entire one hour interview, and CBS showed it twice. Other Republicans didn't complain then, but they are now. Why? This is a two fer one... the liberal universities brainwash students, Iran is crazy and we need to bomb them, blah, blah, etc. etc.

Here's the common sense. If you're a secularist trying to demonstrate the danger in right-wing religious fundamentalism you get some wacko to make a fool of himself.
I hope he does speak and I hope people see the similarities between's Iran's religious right and America religious right.
The only difference is one of degree. Amercan cons are LIBERAL in comparison to the cons/traditionalists of the middle east.

My guess is you are not, nor would you ever be a student of Columbia. So I guess they care very little what you think. As far as why someone might want to hear what he has to say...maybe we learned a lesson from ignoring terrorists in the past....
