My wife is a teacher, she just got a new 7 year old student in her 1st grade class. The parents have been "home schooling" the little girl. She should be in 3rd grade, but she is educated to a pre-kindergarten level, so they "dropped" her in 1st grade. She has a 4 letter name, and can't spell it. She doesn't even know her abc's. No, she is not mentally handicapped, just not a lick of education.

The mom said that she tried buying the girl the little workbooks from the teacher store, but the girl didn't do anything with them. Hello, the girl can't read, not a letter, how do you think she is going to do anything in a workbook?

I feel so bad for this girl, she is so far behind that, even with being two grades lower than she should be, she will never catch up. She can't be blamed, how can she learn anything when her so-called "home-schooling parents" don't teach anything!?!

Okay, punishment is not quite the right word. Maybe there's a different word.

It's just that the mother basically admitted that she ignored this girl. And my wife doesn't have the time to teach one girl alone when she has 33 others in the room. And the girl can't stay after school at all or she will miss the bus (and it is against school policy for a teacher to have a student in thier personal vehicle, ie give her a ride home after private tutoring)

Thats awful! Maybe your wife could be her mentor though, most kids have a lot of success with that.

All we want to do in this country is punish people! There is no changing the past, and punishing the parents wont help the girl catch up. They obviously thought home schooling would be best for their child, but realized it was a mistake and now they put her into a real school.

If you REALLY care about the child, help her catch up! You don't care though. You just want to feel high and mighty and punish the parents for making a mistake.

I don't think parent's need to be punished, I think they need to be educated! They should be required to take some parenting classes or something. They just need some help themselves.

EDIT
I see what you're saying. But what about summer school? She is far behind most kids her age, but I'm sure with enough summer schools she'll eventually catch up. Unless there is no sumer school plan for elementary schools? This is a special case, and I agree that it is the parents fault. I just don't think they should be punished. Like I said, they should be required to take parenting classes, because they are obviously unable to raise a child properly. As far as the girl, either summer school if it's available to that age group, or the parents need to hire a tutor, or go to Kumon or Sylvan Learning Center, or something... There's hope for the kid, there's always hope. It's just going to be a lot harder than the average child.

Well as long as people don't want government interference there will be people who get away with this and worse. Punishment is the wrong approach, definately intervention and accountability. Punishment would only hurt the kids more. Many parents neglect their kids some even by giving them everything they want but not enough of what they need. There should be a test people have to take before they can bear children.

Archy,

the best thing to do is to ask your wife to help the girl on an individual basis, and yes parents can be punnished, if thier kids do something horible, its called jail.

Blessed Be.
