i have windows XP home edition and everytime I rebuild my computer, i have this yellow shield in the lower right corner telling me that I have updates ready to install. I've done this many times and it causes all kinds of problems? I have a DELL DIMENSION 4700 and I also want to know if the computer I have is also the culprit?

Unfortunately, it's part of Windoze that is built in - you can turn it off, but then your system will be outdated (and thus MORE vulnerable to other viruses)...

You can, of course, turn off the automatic updates, but when you do that, Windows XP is NOT current and you will have trouble with everything. The yellow install shield is trying to get you to let it either download, or install the updates it has already downloaded. You should have Windows XP SP1 and SP2 already installed. If you don't, it may be trying to get you to download SP2, which is a very lengthy process, and not one I'd attempt. If you don't have SP2, and you have a legit Windows XP, Microsoft will send you SP2 free, just ask for it.

Either turn off Updates in the Control Panel, or download ONLY the critical updates and not the drivers and other non-critical stuff.

the same happens on my computer...it is a way to download updates in virus spyware. You have to shut off the automatic updates. and yes it can be pretty annoying but it is not ur computer, it is the program that is already installed in it.
