I'm living in New Brunswick, Canada, and I don't have a lease. When I moved in we discussed this, and he encouraged me to get a roommate (it's a 2 bedroom apt), he just wanted a reference first. Now he's trying to sell the house (it's been on the market for 4 months now and no serious prospects at the moment) and he says he doesn't want me to get one, because it would "complicate things". Is he legally allowed to refuse me? I doubt he could find reasonable objection to her, as she would have excellent references.

Without a lease you may do better. I'd contact the local renter's association. Oh and get a lease, it will protect you in the long run.

It doesn't matter if he told you the place was free... without a lease you have nothing to go by. He can change his mind about a roommate at anytime. If you are paying rent a month at a time then you have, in effect, a month-to-month lease. If you want/need a roommate in order to make the rent, then move out to a place that allows one specifically.

ALWAYS get a lease. It protects you and the landlord and treats it like a business relationship, which it is, instead of a personal relationship (which many people tend to treat it as).

Without a lease you can do whatever you want but doing so may cause the landlord to give both of a 30 day notice to quit.

Without a lease, it's "He said, she said." Get your roomie. Keep in mind that if he sells the place, you'll be out in 30 days.

what he's saying is if the house sells, the new owner may want to live in the house, then you AND your new roommate would have to look for new places to live
