First of all, I'll go with the 1960s and 1970s Montreal Canadiens style of play and go with 3 scoring lines and checking line. The checking line IS the shut-down line. Although those Montreal teams had Cournoyer and Beliveau killing penalties and Lafleur and Shutt playing opposite Leach-Clark-XYZ and Macleish-Barber-Saleski regularly.

Line 1: Thornton - Iginla - Naslund
- Thornton and Iginla have played together in an All-Star game, the 2004 World Cup and the 2006 Olympics
Line 2: Crosby - Jagr - Ovechkin
- Crosby and Ovechkin rocked at the 2006 Young Stars Game and Jagr has the smarts to play with these two
Line 3: Lecavalier - Gionta - Kovalchuk
- lecavalier plays with a short guy in Tampa so Gionta's height shouldn't be an issue. Kovalchuk and Gionta will both benefit from Lecavalier's passing too.
Line 4: E. Staal - Guerin - Elias
- Staal is a very good faceoff man, and Guerin is too slow to keep up with the offense and played in Jersey's D first style for a while. Elias has always been in Jersey's D-first style
D-Line 1: Lidstrom and Hannan
- Lidstrom is both offensive and defensive minded. Hannan's defensive skills allow this to be the unit that playes both with Line 1 and Line 4
D-Line 2: Niedermayer and Pronger
- familiarity helps these two
D-Line 3: Souray and Rafalski
- this was a solid D pairing for New Jersey to start the 1999-2000 season and I think they can work together again
Starting Goalie: Dominik Hasek
