I have some ornamental pine trees in whiskey barrels outdoors. They seem to have turned a bit yellowish. Early in the season I gave them a bit of organic fertilizer (milorganite) and a couple of months ago a very light feeding of Osmocote. I water thoroughly once per week. They are in a semi sheltered area. What do you suggest?

most likely they need iron.... chelated iron will green up anything that's lacking in iron..... in spring give them a fertlizer for acid loving plants.... or add a little garden sulphur to a watering .... as mentioned, make sure there's drainage for the plants.... I had to drill holes in my barrels and use some crushed soda cans as help to keep the drains open and the water flowing freely..... it won't hurt to try the iron, whether you feel it's necessary or not, say, if you decide the pot isn't draining.... it's still something needed by evergreens on occasion....especially those that are potted.... be sure to mulch the top of the barrel, too... and see to how you'll protect these potted plants thru winter if your season is very cold... if it is, you will want those plants in the ground and mulched to survive.... and soon, so they'll have time to settle in before freezeup....

Maybe you stop feeding so much? Giving fertilizer means this plants to grow more vigorous and bigger. It might need a bigger space already. Just water it once a week and see what happens. By the way, did you make some draining hole on the whiskey barrels? It's important to do that, even if the barrels is big.

Maybe they need bigger pots or more soil. You won't know till you take them out of the pots. Miracle gro has always worked well for me, too. Also, do the pots drain? If not you may be over-watering.

SOUNDS LIKE WATER. EVEN IF YOU HAVE DRAIN HOLES IN THE BOTTOM, YOU NEED A LAYER OF ROCKS, BROKEN CLAY POTS, ETC. TO ALLOW AN AREA FOR DRAINING UNDER THE SOIL.

You may need to put these trees in the ground - pines are extremely "greedy", I've had minature pines die in pots.
