They observed wandering stars in the night sky with the eye. Planet is the Greek word for wanderer. These 7 heavenly bodies moved differently than the backround stars.

There's no mystery and Elvis had nothing to do with it. The ancients could see some planets with the naked eye and so can you. Mars, Venus, Saturn and Jupiter are all easily visible. Check your local newspaper for when to see them. The planets have a different appearance than stars and other celestial objects. On a very clear night you can even discern a round shape of Jupiter...

Anyone can see the plants mercury, venus, mars, jupiter and saturn without a telescope. Those planets were visible and well known to ancient civilizations. I don't see any connection between ET aliens and ancient peoples' knowledge of the planets, so I don' t buy your theory.

Who made the aliens? Ancient people didn't know the nature of the planets. Heck, we didn't know hardly anything about them until the Pioneer and Voyager probes sent back pictures and data.

The planets were observed by the ancients who noticed that they changed their positions in the sky. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn are visible to the naked eye.

The term planet is from the Greek πλανήται (planētai) which means 'wanderers'.

They looked. As someone on this site wrote a few days ago, the sky at night was like a big TV with only one channel. Get out in the country at night. Get well away from any town, at least 5 miles or 8 kilometres from a small one, and more from a large one. Now look at the sky. You will see more stars than you imagined existed. There was no light pollution in ancient, medieval or even recent modern times times to obscure the night skies.

If you stand in one place on successive nights you will see that stars move, not only do they rise and set like the Sun and Moon, but you will also see that a few bright ones move in relation to the background behind them which remain in the same places relative to each other.

This is the origin of the word "star". It comes from the same root as "steel", "stern", "stiff" and even "Stalin". It means firmly in place or rigid, ideas like that. Planet means wanderer, since the planets moved in relation to the fixed stars.

Edit How come your avatar has changed since I answered this question? Looks like male to female.

OK you are made by Alien (I am not). Next question is - who the hell made Aliens? Don't you think there MUST be starting point somewhere since the Univerce is relatively young, some 13.6 billions years?
And in fact ancient people did NOT know a lot about planets - except mere fact that they are definetly not stars because they travel across the sky, amongst "fixed" stars.

The question I have is "haven't you got any kind of encyclopedia in your house"? If not, you better ask your parents why. However, there are encyclopedias all over the internet now. Try wikipedia, or just Google some questions, like "how big are the planets" or "planetary sizes". It aint hard, believe me. But just about any encyclopedia that was ever written has planetary data in them. Is there not a library at school? Near home?

They weren't dummies. They have the same mind we all have. If you really study the sky, you can see the difference between a star and a planet with the naked eye. Then, you will notice orbits and how the sky changes over time, and you can make a decent hypothesis.
After all, they did create economy, math, science, civilization, and architecture. I think they would be able to recognize changes in the sky.

The inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter) are visible to the naked eye if viewed under the proper conditions ...

the original word, planētai, means "wanderers" in Greek ... because the other stars seemed stationary, while the planets moved from night to night.
