There is probably a different standard of living. Every state has different expenses and various 'Costs of Living'. But in general - everything is cheaper down south - unless you are in a tourist area. I for instance live in Minnesota - and everything is ridiculously expensive here. Its partially due to our tax rate, and partially due to our proximity to the Canadian border. Texas is closer to Mexico so its cheaper - I'm not sure about the taxes there - but stuff like that really makes a difference. It has nothing to do with death rates. Also Texas has had a lot of flood damage this year - so property values may have plumeted due to the disasters in surrounding areas.

Prices in Texas and Missouri depend on where you buy. New homes sell here in Texas from maybe 80 a sq ft to way over 200 a sq ft. Just depends on where in Texas you want to live. Older homes sell for both less than that and much more than that.
I have lived here all my life. When I was a young child most of the people that lived here had been born here. Now most are from Chicago, New York, California and of course Mexico. There is a reason everyone has moved here. Lots of affordable land and lots of good jobs are two of the reasons.

A large number of houses were built in Texas during an oil boom (in the 1980's?). Then the oil boom ended and the house prices came down.

Not sure where you're looking. Housing in Joplin is considerably larger and cheaper than San Antonio, DFW or Houston. Now, if your comparing Seguin, TX with KC, MO it would be different. Also, keep in mind that property taxes in TX are about 3 - 5 times higher than MO. I know, I just sold some property in TX and the property taxes were killing me.
