Why?

One of the most common questions following a stillbirth is, "Why did my baby die?" Answering this question is not always easy or possible. Extensive and careful examination of the baby and placenta is needed following delivery. This includes an internal autopsy and several other studies. Often these evaluations will provide helpful information and eventually bring peace of mind. With extensive evaluation, a cause for stillbirth can be identified in 40%-50% of all stillbirths. Even when a cause is not specifically identified, at least potential high risks for recurrence may be ruled out. Parents who experience stillbirth will be asked to consider extensive evaluations for their baby. Many will want everything done to try to discover why their baby died. Others may think that such assessment violates their baby. The decision should be theirs. They will need to choose what is best for them.

Causes

Information about cause can be very important for parents and families. It may help parents in planning future pregnancies by providing insight to the frequently asked question, "Will stillbirth happen again?" The information may also help parents and families to deal emotionally with their loss. Knowledge, in general, can be empowering, and it may provide a sense of comfort by helping to alleviate uncertainty or guilt.

Identifiable causes of stillbirth generally fall into one of three different categories: birth defects in the baby, problems with the placenta or umbilical cord, or maternal illnesses or conditions which may sometimes affect pregnancy.

Birth defects are common but often overlooked causes for stillbirth. About one-fourth of babies who are stillborn have one or more birth defects that are responsible for their death.

The placenta and umbilical cord are the baby’s "lifeline" for oxygen and nutrients. Problems in either one may completely cut off or severely interfere with the needed flow of blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the baby. Although commonly pointed to as the likely cause for the death of a baby, problems with the placenta or umbilical cord actually account for only a moderate number of stillbirths.

Although uncommon, maternal conditions may be responsible for stillbirth. Certain illnesses in the mother, such as diabetes or hypertension, and their treatments, sometimes cause stillbirths. An increased risk for stillbirth is also associated with the use of certain recreational drugs, particularly cocaine.

In addition, there are many other rare causes of stillbirth.

At this point, you'll know ahead of time. Back in the day, they didn't. If you're far enough along in your pregnancy and you miscarry, you will need to deliver the baby and they'll induce you and you'll go through labor like you would have had it been alive. It is also possible for the baby to have complications during labor, but most of the time they do an emergency c-section, so it's a non issue. Just think about a healthy baby--that's all you can do!

Not always. Some babies can thrive in utero but just came seem to make it out of the uterus. Weather it be lung developement, heart conditions, or what not. Also remember coming into this world is a shock to their system. They are no longer living off of some one else. They are also trying to breathe on their own for the first time. Also some babies umbilical cord gets pinched during the delivery causing the oxygen to their brain to stop.

There are a huge number of factors. Sometimes it's basicly a late "miscarriage" when the baby will die due to a defect of the heart or brain. There are times when an injury to the mother can cause too great of trauma (car accident or a bad fall). Then there are times when things can go wrong with the cord placement or the placenta. My mom had a "freak" accident when she was pregnant with a sister of mine. She was rocking my oldest sister who was around 2.5 years old. She went to get out of the chair and she felt a pop she said. My dad took her to the ER to check things out. Turns out with the positioning of the baby and when she went to stand up, the baby's neck snapped. She delivered her stillborn at 8 months along. They found out the findings during an autopsy. Things happen, and sometimes it's beyond our control! Good Luck and God Bless to ALL pregnant women.

Your doctor should check the heart beat of your baby at every prenatal visit. If there was a problem you would know! I was worried like that when I was pregnant with my 2! Only I thought I was going to die because I had two back to back c-sections! But everything will be ok hun! Just trust your instincts when you think something is wrong! Ok hun! GOOD LUCK!

Sometimes there is no medical explanation as to why babies die in utero...just like there seems to be no logical explanation for babies who die of SIDS. A doctor will monitor babies' heartbeats throughout the pregnancy and during labor, but sometimes unexplainable things just happen and the baby dies. All you can do is pray for a healthy baby.

There is all kinds of reason's. The number one thing is labor! Labor can put stress on the baby and cause heart rate to drop. It happen to my first son and they were lucky to get him out in time his heart rate had dropped to 56! Some times doctors just don't know why.

Babies that die during pregnancy before 24 weeks are considered miscarriages. Babies that die during pregnancy after 24 weeks are considered stillborns.

Even if the doctor knows that the baby has died you still have to go through contractions and labor to get the baby out.
