If it is a new computer it runs Vista, right. Well, if so, right click and click personalize. Then click on "change desktop icons" on the right-side bar. Then check (or tick) the "recycle bin" text. Then click OK. That should do it.

You didn't mentionwhich os your using but with you saying it's a new computer i'll show you how to get it back on your desktop in Vista

Right click on the desktop, then click "personlize", in the window that comes up look in the blue/green pane on the left, and click on the "change desktop icons" link.
A dialogue box should come up, at the top tick the box next to "recycle bin". Ones with ticks will be shown on your desktop

Also "x_southernbelle" gave good advice don't mess with the registry unless there is nothing left to try as it doesn't take many mistakes in the registry to ruin your computer

Hope this helps

hmm, i never thought that would happen, but, i really have no use for the recycle bin (not trash bin) it just takes up more space, and if you send something to the bin, if it was installed then you could get it back through System Restore. You can simply back up your data instead then getting it back if you need. If there is a real need then just pop in the windows CD that should have come with your computer, since it's new, there shouldnt be much on there anyways, so I hope that helps.

In Win XP:

Right Click the Desktop>select Properties>Desktop Tab>Customize Desktop button>try clicking the Restore Default button under the Illustration of the various System Desktop Icons>Click the OKs to get out and see if that works.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!!!

BTW: Do NOT use that "script" given in the first answer!!! I've made the mistake of using "scripts" before with negative consequences.

And the guy below me gave you a link to show you how to mess with your Registry. BAD Idea!!!...if you don't know what you're doing in there you WILL most likely ruin your OS and have to go through the jumping through hoops that M$ makes you do just to be able to re-install your Operating System. So don't even go there!!! ;)

Open Windows Explorer and look at the very bottom of the tree on the left hand pane. Just below My Network Places. You should see it there.

This is the easiest method. Try this before trying the other suggestions. Right click in an empty spot in the middle of the desktop, go to "Arrange Icons By", and click "Name".
