By planning long term and medium term for the important stuff, but living in the moment for the fun stuff.

For example: I save for retirement, because I expect to be around for awhile after I retire. That's long term - at least 10 years out, in my case.

For the medium term, I look at what I want to do in the next year or three, and figure out how to make it happen. My wife and I are planning our vacations for the next 2 years. Two years from now will be a big anniversary for us, so we want to save and be able to pay for most or all of that, rather than put it all on a credit card. That means that next year's vacation will be a more low key affair.

In the short term, I don't mind putting off chores for more fun stuff, if there's no significant downside to delaying the work. Letting the grass grow another day in exchange for a chance to get out and go bike riding, play tennis, or do something fun is a good trade in my book. The yard isn't going anywhere, and the neighbors don't mind if it looks just a bit shaggy once in awhile.

I read and think. I listen to other people's opinions and try to discover those who I think are honestly trying to discover what is true and what is the best way to live a human life. I try to rid my life of as much illusion and bologna as I can every day of my life. I try to discover what those I love need and attempt to provide it to them. I try to be a good citizen and care for those that share in my community.

I give my best in the thngs that i do, specially those that are important to me so i wouldn't have regrets in the future. What we have now is a product of how we conducted ourselves in the past. And although by giving my best, may not mean I would get the best but surely, i would get what i deserve.
