I have never been to Nantucket, but I know the answer to this question - A HORSE OWNER IN NANTUCKET NEEDS TO BE RICH! Even in Arizona (where the range is free and the grass plentiful) it is a major investment to own a horse. Horses require occasional medical treatment, shoes and hoof trimming, oats, supplements, and a shelter. It requires a larger investment than it does to raise a fairly healthy child. It would be far cheaper to rent a good horse when you have the urge to ride.

You have to take into consideration that the initial price you pay for the horse will be the cheapest purchase- you have to buy the feed/hay, vet checks, boarding, shoes, saddles, etc. You need to contact the place where you would board the horse when you move and see how much it costs monthly and what all the price includes.

Horses are great pets, but among the most expensive to maintain, and those vet bills. How about a cute pet goat?
