Does anyone know of anything that I can protect my PIN numbers and passwords for my banking websites? I don't feel real comfortable writing them down on a piece of paper. I would like to keep these on my computer in a file that is secure and can't be hacked into. This will allow me to keep track of all my PIN's and online passwords.

Better yet, keep them on the thumb drive you carry around with you.

If you insist on keeping them on the computer, put them in a folder and encrypt the folder.

First, ensure that auto complete is turned off on your web browser so that the information is not saved in forms... you can delete this information in the same place you delete temporary files (clear forms).

If you really want to keep this kind of informaiton on your computer then I would suggest purchasing a program like PGP (pretty good privacy) which is encryption software. You could encrypt a single file, you can create an encrypted partition for a lot of fles, or you can encrypt the entire disk (WDE whoe disk encryption) which is a terrific option for laptop users. As long as you keep a backup of your encryption key someplace safe... noone will be able to hack through the encryption (it would take years and years or forever depending on what strength of encryption you use).

good luck.

I've been a victim of identity theft and learned the hard way. The number one method of protecting your passwords and pin numbers is to change them OFTEN. At least every two weeks. Keep a slip of paper in a safe place in your home that only YOU know of, and only use that spot. Make sure you're using plenty of characters, alpha and numeric and case sensitive. I know it's a hassle, but that's the easiest and most effective way to protect yourself AND your assets! Best of Luck.
