It's a forum for people who may not have the skills but do want to repair items themself. It is also a place for those with experience to pass on some knowledge to those who may need some advice on doing something themself instead of having to pay a serviceman big bucks.
Like the person who has an A/C problem, the experience person will give some suggestions on what to do to correct it. That way the person might be able to save a few bucks by replacing the filter than having a serviceman come out and tell him he needs to replace his filters. Ask a question and spend $5 for a new filter; call a tech spend $95 plus $5 for the filter.

Oh ANDY you do deserve the 10.
Without trying to be disrespectful. the category is defined by the name it's been given. Primarily at its base DIY relates to fixing/repairing/crafting/creating/exploring the need or desire to do something without having it done by someone else.
While that doesn't always save money it does allow some levels of self accomplishment senses; some feelings of self worth; some knowledge gained in the process; and at times some bragging rights. "I CAN DO" is a large part of the entire context of DIY, on a personal level.

This segment of Q&A is where people come most often to ASK...as you did, regarding things they want advice about in the HOW TO process; from those who may have direct experience in that issue.

LOL. That is a good question. DYI stands for do it yourself, which actually means try to do it yourself, if you fail, that's ok, try again, keep trying until you give up in disgust, then hire a subcontractor to come out and do it right. They way it should have been done the first time, except now you are broke. And disgusted.

Figure it out for yourself.

Kidding! I'm KIDDING! Get it? "Do It Yourself"... like, figure out the answer to your question by yourself, too....
Anyone?
Well, that's what the DIY category is about, I think.
