Advantages And Disadvantages Of Democracy

If you ask a capitalist to explain extreme socialism in one word, they'll say "slavery". If you ask a socialist to explain extreme capitalism in one word, they'll either say "feudalism" or "anarchy". "Feudalism" is when we had kings and queens; the socialist would be comparing CEOs of larger corporations to kings and queens. So the basic fears are that Socialism takes away a person's personal choices and makes people work for the "best" choice (and whoever decides what the "best" choice is is usually pretty darn well off), and Capitalism doesn't require a strong central authority, which means that it's easier for small groups of people to obtain a lot of wealth and power. Really, the two concepts aren't opposites. You can have a strong central government that provides everything, which is concerned with its GDP and not the people that are part of the government. The word for that kind of government that goes to both the extremes people are afraid of is "Fascism". So really, when people talk about the evils of Capitalism and the evils of Socialism, they're really talking about the evils of Fascism. You can't really compare Socialism to Capitalism directly, but you can compare both to Fascism. It's like comparing chocolate, vanilla, and earwax. What people are afraid of is a small group of people getting a lot of power and say over how other people live their lives. I personally think Capitalism has a better set of tools for preventing this from happening, but no one should ever be so married to their personal philosophy that they can't see its flaws. The reason why I think Capitalism is better is because Socialism relies on a small group of people having a lot of power to begin with. It's fighting fire with fire. Even if that strong group is "all of society", so that no one person has too much say in how things happen, "all of society" still acts a lot like that small group of people who have a lot of power and control, and still causes all the same problems. So I personally view Socialism as preventing a fire by burning the building down intentionally.

Advantage: in a world of diminishing jobs because of computerization, automation and technological streamlining, there really won't be enough work for everyone. The population will continue to grow and jobs get scarcer and scarcer. Corporations monopolizing, leveraging buyouts and bankrupting competitors further deteriorate the job market.

People will need to be able to live, especially since inflation REALLY does exist, despite the way it gets downplayed by experts. Socialism in some form may offer relief from this. So, also, would massive public works programs to restore the infrastructure we have let slide because of poor prioritization.

Disadvantages of socialism are well know. The truly lazy take advantage of it.

But then, there are truly lazy businessmen who rather than making their wealth with productivity do it with theft and manipulation of the market place. They become wealthy off the weak regulatory structure... but hey, they're rich, so their laziness does not offend, nor I guess their corruption.

I'm a social democrat or democratic socialist as you wish.I wouldn't say there are disadvantages. There are dangers as with any political view if carried out too extreme and if you put ideology before reason.A risk of having a welfare state like social Democrats advocate is that social programs become too convenient and are no longer a hand up.That needs to be avoided.People always remain people and corrupt politicians exist on al sides. In social Democracy those in power could try directly or indirectly to keep votes of those dependent on the social programs by making sure enough people enjoy those programs. The most corrupt politicians might also try to give the poor voters the impression the programs are a favor from them instead of solidarity of the community. In that way they could buy votes. That's bad and needs to be avoided.

The advantages are numerous.People are treated as people and the economic reality isn't ignored but not made into the most and only important indicator of well being either.Jungle capitalism kills literally on a big scale if you look at it globally.People before profit but with respect for individuality.

12. Democratic socialism is an international movement for freedom, social justice and solidarity. Its goal is to achieve a peaceful world where these basic values can be enhanced and where each individual can live a meaningful life with the full development of his or her personality and talents and with the guarantee of human and civil rights in a democratic framework of society.

13. Freedom is the product of both individual and cooperative efforts - the two aspects are parts of a single process. Each person has the right to be free of political coercion and also to the greatest chance to act in pursuit of individual goals and to fulfil personal potential. But that is only possible if humanity as a whole succeeds in its long-standing struggle to master its history and to ensure that no person, class, sex, religion or race becomes the servant of another.

14. Justice and Equality. Justice means the end of all discrimination against individuals, and the equality of rights and opportunities. It demands compensation for physical, mental and social inequalities, and freedom from dependence on either the owners of the means of production or the holders of political power.

Equality is the expression of the equal value of all human beings and the precondition for the free development of the human personality. Basic economic, social and cultural equality is essential for individual diversity and social progress.

Freedom and equality are not contradictory. Equality is the condition for the development of individual personality. Equality and personal freedom are indivisible.

15. Solidarity is all-encompassing and global. It is the practical expression of common humanity and of the sense of compassion with the victims of injustice. Solidarity is rightly stressed and celebrated by all major humanist traditions. In the present era of unprecedented interdependence between individuals and nations, solidarity gains an enhanced significance since it is imperative for human survival.

16. Democratic socialists attach equal importance to these fundamental principles. They are interdependent. Each is a prerequisite of the other. As opposed to this position, Liberals and Conservatives have placed the main emphasis on individual liberty at the expense of justice and solidarity while Communists have claimed to achieve equality and solidarity, but at the expense of freedom.

If you're referring to a plan by the Democrats, it's all a Republican fiction. Its advantage or (disadvantage depending on your point of view) is that some voters may be duped into supporting a Republican candidate if they are persuaded that the Democrats will turn the US into a "socialist" nation.
