I've never read the book, but I have seen the musical, and it is probably my favourite musical of all time. I should read the book, though, and compare and contrast the two.

The book is much more complicated than the film or stages versions. A lot of this is because Hugo often goes off on very long tangents. For example, as one character is traveling, he passes by the site where the Battle of Waterloo took place. Hugo then goes on to describe the battle in intricate detail, although this is not part of the plot at all. Almost a fourth of the book is made up of various essays on different topics that are inserted in while being only lightly related to the story. However, these are for the most part quite interesting. You asked if the subjects would be too mature for you. If you aren't familiar with the historical setting, you can easily look up any questions online to help you understand what is happening. And it is a very informative book all around, so by the end you will know a lot more about the subjects. If by "mature" you were asking if it would have inappropriate subject matter, then you don't need to worry. The book isn't really so difficult, it mostly just takes some motivation to get through it all. If you have the will and the patience, though, the book is much more enjoyable than the movie precisely because it is so thorough and detailed. Give it a try, as it is definitely worth reading. And if it turns out to be too difficult, you can always try again in a few years. If you really want a number though, I would say 12 or 13.

To be honest, I thought it was very long-winded and at times boring. But I read it 10+ years ago, so maybe if I read it now...I might have a different view of it.

Yes, I read it for pleasure and I found it absolutely brilliant. If you like it you should read The Count of Monte Cristo.
