Tradition is to carve a jack o'lantern (email me if you need instructions) and hand out candy.

The rules are, leave your porch light on so that trick-or-treaters know you're open for business. If you run out of candy, turn off the light. One or two stupid people who forget this rule might still knock on the door after you've turned off the light, but don't answer. They'll expect candy.

The kids will come up and say "Trick or treat!" give them each a small piece of store-bought wrapped candy (it's also nice to have snack bags of cookies or crackers for very young children who may not be old enough to eat candy). It makes them very happy if you compliment their costumes, even to just sound amazed.

Some kids may start coming before dark, but most will be out after the sun goes down.

That's it! There's also lots of Halloween things to do if you're interested, check around locally.

Just go to the local walmart and pick up a bag or two of candy. Keep your porch lights outside on so the children know that you are handing out candy and have a good time. Buying a pumpkin or another halloween decoration is always nice too. If you are not sure how many children will come to your house ask your neighbours next door. They can help give you an idea of how much candy to buy. Have fun!

metimoteo has the right idea. If you want to know how much candy to give out, ask your neighbors what to expect. Some neighborhoods have hundreds of kids, others may only get a few. Make sure you have enough candy for the estimated number of children you expect.

Porchlights are the signal to kids that you have candy for them. So don't keep yours on unless you do have candy.

Do not invite kids in to your house. Just give them a piece of candy or two on your front porch.

Have fun and enjoy the costumes and festivities.

If you do not wish to participate - cut off the front porch light & the lights in the front part of your house. That way folks will know not to knock at your door!

If you DO wish to participate!!, Set out some jack o-lanterns, decorate the front of the house, pull up a comfy chair & wait for the kiddies to come for candy! Ask a neighbor what kind of turn out they get each year so you'll know how much candy to buy & get a good assortment. Be sure to buy the good stuff so if any is left over, you won't mind eating it!!! Oh, don't give them any candy till they say Trick or Treat!!!

Happy Halloween!!!!

This is a really FUN holiday. You will LOVE it. Dress up in a really scary costume. Decorate the front of your house with fake spider webs, put out strobe lights, play spooky music ............ but dont EVER forget to give out candy.

Have a big bowl of candy ready. When they knock or ring the doorbell you give them some candy.

Typically when they come to the door they say, "Trick or treat!" Which means 'give me candy'.

If you dont give out candy or act like your not home........ they may throw eggs at your house or soap your windows or throw toilet paper all over your trees and in your yard.

You definitely want to be home that night. Even sit outside your house if you can. Just sit out there with your bowl of candy and give a little candy ( or a toy or money ) to each kid in the neighborhood.

Candy- Give out prewrapped store bought candy. No one wants homeade candy. They will be too scared to eat it.

Happy Halloween!!!

Keep your outdoor light on to signal that you welcome trick-or-treaters.

Decorate to your desire. You don't have to go overboard, a simple jack-o'-lantern is sufficient.

Buy ample amounts of candy or other treats. Keep your receipt and don't open all the bags at once. That way you can return what you don't use and you'll have less to eat yourself if you don't have a big turnout Halloween night. Otherwise, you could give the last child who comes to your door the extra candy. That's what I like to do.

who're you to assert that Wisconsin instructors do not tutor? I attend a Wisconsin college, and that i'm confident that the vast majority of instructors do in fact tutor and don't mistreat the device the unions have set up.
