Did you guys read about the German Politician who suggested this?

I think she's on to something!

I'm not sure about the exact statistics, but I know that over half of married couples end up divorced anyways. Think of all the money they would save on divorce lawyers! The only problem I can think of, is what would happen to the kids and the couples material possessions? How would they be split up?

Of course if you are entirely in love and want to spend the rest of your life with your partner, your marriage should be renewed free of charge with just a couple of signatures or something. Unless of course you want to have another ceremony.

I think this law will inspire people to work harder to keep their marriages alive and happy. If you know that after 7 years, your spouse has the option to just not renew the marriage, free of charge, you'll probably make a better effort in your relationship.

I agree. Marriage is a committment you make in your heart -not on a piece of paper; that's simply for legal purposes. If your heart is in the right place, you will renew your license over and over again. No document stating 7 years, 20 years, or even forever will be able to change the condition of your heart.

I have totally though of this before, and like the idea a lot. Just like with common law marriage, if you break up you may need to go to court anyway to deal with assets or child custody issues. However, at least you can just let the marriage "expire" so that a vengeful or abusive spouse can't drag on a divorce forever.

seems like a plan but I can a lot more disolved marriages than married people all of a sudden. Sure, it seems good instead of waiting 20 yrs (when kids go to college) but what if you are having a bad year, and decide to disolve the marriage. Myself and my spouse had a difficulty at the 7yr mark where I think either one of us wanted out but we stuck it out, worked out our probs and it's not three yrs later and we now sit back and think we were stupid. Get the point?

That is a good idea why not if you still love the person then you can stay with them. It also lets people separate without as many hard feelings.

Well, I'd suggest selling your stock in Hallmark or any other company that makes those 25th anniversary cards and party favors.

you shouldn't put an expiration date on your marriage, you will never know when it will expire,
