Due to computer problems and upgrading, about the only thing I need to build a second system is a case. This would be for mass storage, back up, etc. And doesn't have to be state of the art to set the world on fire.

The only thing I need is a case which a local computer store said usually runs about 12 bucks. Then the operating system. I run XP on my system but I don't think I can install that on a system system for more than 30 days. I can install Win98 or ME.

Is it true that when you buy the XP you can only put it on one computer you own? And, if the answer is yes, I've heard that Win98 is more stable than ME. I'm thinking just for basic use, mass storage, etc. Either 98 or ME would be acceptable. Comments? Suggestions?

One license one pc why not try Linux. How much storage are you really looking for anyhow. this may sound like an advertisement but I just bought a 400 GB external western digital hard drive for $49.00 after rebate at Staples. When you think about it the price of external hard drives is down dramatically as you can get a half a terrabyte for about $130 dollars retail.

I would build the old pc with a flavor of Linux but would also look into external hard drives for storage as well as network attached storage solutions as well.

As far as Windows 98 vs Me Windows 98 second edition far surpasses windows me.

Win98 is a better program and more stable than ME.

But why do you need a totally new computer for mass storage?
You can buy a large remote drive and use that. They sell them in up to a Terabyte size. Sure it takes a while to back up your computer over a USB cable so you leave it running overnight or better yet over the weekend.

As for XP if the two computers don't talk with each other and you don't register it on line then you can use your copy on a second machine. However, you won't get the automatic updates. To do that Microsoft may be a pain in the rear and make you buy a license for the second copy.

Hi your first problem with using ME or 98 may be caused by the fact that XP normally uses NTFS filing system while ME and 98 uses FAT 32

You may well be better off to just get a USB external hard drive case and fit the Hard drive from your old unit into this the USB case can be obtained for about a £10 on Ebay

Good Luck

I'm with Dan S.

If all you need is storage then a decent USB2 HDD and some good syncing software is all you want, surely?

You can get Caddys for 3.5" HDD divers which convert them into USB drives or go and get a ready to go one.

Lacie do amazing 250G drives that don't even need external power, just USB2.

Syncexp is an amazingly flexible bit of SW and IT'S FREE!

if your not going xp you got to go with 2000 pro. 98 has hardrive size issues. I would just find an old computer in ebay for 100 bucks or so that came with xp like an older dell or something and just put a large d drive in it.

Personally I'd reccomend you go with XP. It's going to be easier to work with when transferring files. Although it is true that you can only install your copy of XP once, there are some sketchy ways around it, that you probably don't won't to get involved in. There are also less than legal methods if you're into that kind of thing. But however you go about it I'd say XP is going to make your life easiest for the task at hand.

They go all the way up to one terabyte (1000 GB)
