I've commented on this many times. If I award someone a BA and get not so much as a simple "thanks" that person has FAR LESS chance of EVER getting another from me. I DO NOT consider it petty in finding it impolite to render such a simple courtesy. Hand me my lunch at McDonald's and I WILL thank you . Step aside to allow me access to some item on a grocery shelf and I WILL thank you. It's a simple bit of etiquette that often is overlooked in today's society.

It never dawned on me to enter a comment after the asker has chosen my answer as Best Answer. I used to send e-mails to thank each asker. However, I stopped doing that when my first account was suspended.
Because of your question, I am going through each of my Best Answers and leaving the comment "Thank you for choosing my answer as Best Answer!"
This is a great way of thanking the asker. I just hope they notice my comment of thanks. I am wondering if they will receive an e-mail alerting them about the comment as I have never received one. Perhaps the new system generates one!
Part of choosing a Best Answer requires making a comment. I always type "Thank you!" I am, however, very cautious about saying much more because I don't want to be reported by a malicious user for chatting!

That's why I would stop giving them a best answer after a while as I feel that I was used for a best answer and because I feel that it's rude not to thank the asker for giving you a best answer especially when they could have picked anybody other then me. Therefore I always thank the asker for giving me a best answer whether by email or by leaving a comment simply because I would like that person to thank me as well.

I didn't know you could leave comments, how do you do that???
Sometimes, I want to know if what was suggested worked out for them, or how their situation is going - is there a way to do that?

All depends on the nature of question for me.
If it important then I want to know hoe helpful my answer was and if it's something stupid then I can care less.

I just recently found out about the existence of 'comments' so I wouldn't blame them for not leaving any..
