A county is a collection of towns. The county government usually preforms necessary tasks that are considered too expensive for each town to do individually. Like patrol and provide police protection beyond town limits, run the prison facilities, maintain and service roads between towns, provides courts for trial.

In the United States, almost all of the 50 states are divided into counties. The county seat is located wherever the court house for the county is located, and is the seat of the judicial branch of local government. There are some municipalities that have municipal courts, but the county courts collectively blanket the entire state, and are, generally speaking, the court of the first resort for deciding state criminal cases by a jury of peers, much as a US District Court is the court of first resort for federal criminal cases. Offhand, I don't know of any states that allow apellate or supreme courts to handle trials by jury. Jury trials are almost the exclusive province of the county courts. Most states also create executive and legislative branches at the county level, but the chief reason for drawing boundaries of a county is to draw the boundaries of jurisdiction for a jury trial court.

The USA was not the first nation to use the term "county." Ireland and the UK subdivide their territories into regions called counties, which existed before the USA did. Perhaps the origin of the term "county" referred to land presided over by a noble with the title of Count, much like a Duke or Duchess presides over a duchy, but that is just a guess on my part.

In the U.S., that's a subdivision of a state. It kinda branches off like this: country > state > county. 4 instance, I live in Kern County, which is one of CA's 58 counties. Kern Co. is actually larger then MA. Other counties in California include Los Angeles Co., Stanislaus Co., Del Norte Co., & San Bernadino Co. (which happens 2 b bigger then NH.) Every other state also has counties, w/ the expection of AK, which has boroughs, and LA, which has perishes.

Also, in Ireland, a county is that country's subdivisions, or it's their version of a st8 or province.

Incidentally, we have the Kern County Fair taking place. So I'm gonna feast on some funnel cake, take a look @ some smelly animals, & ride the human slingshot 6x until I vomit. R u hosting a county fair, 2?
