I don't understand. If convicted, they only get around 5-10 years in prison for such a horrible and disgusting crime. I'm very appalled that the government would give such a short punishment for a crime of this nature when they give unbelievable sentences for just about everything else. Why is that?

longterm, you're an idiot. people can lie about any crime and have innocent people punished for it. just because she "might be lying" is no reason to give the rapist only a few years. what if she was telling the truth? not all women are compusive liars

Honestly, I think it really depends on the judge and the case because each case is different.
I just got finished with a rape case and he got 20 years. Yes I believe that most of the offenders need more punishment, But as someone else stated, there is only a certain amount of time to serve that law allows.
Even though they deserve more, I suppose we should look on the bright side, at least they get some kind of punishment.

The short answer is that this is the penalty allowed by the penal code. Write your congressman and say you want the maximum time increased.
The long answer is I don't know...it doesn't seem right to me either.
EDIT: Yah...longterm is way off..lighter sentences are not imposed because someone may be innocent....you do NOT get to the sentencing stage if there is still doubt of the perpetrators guilt...hello...anyone heard of "beyond a reasonable doubt".
Also, I am interested in knowing where this "1/2 of rape complainant" statistic comes from??? In fact, I've heard statistics that about 1/2 of rape crimes actually go unreported.

Only Christians receive light sentences? Really? Was this perp really a Christian to begin with or is he actually, hiding behind the "skirt" of Christianity, as a front for his defence? The reason why MOST criminals receive a "slap upon the wrist" in the Western world concerning crimes committed is because the people have replaced the belief in God and His Righteousness, with themselves and their own, self righteousness. This is what happens when you leave God out of the picture and it will become progressively worse (crime, that is) !

That's what the legislatures often set as the punishment for that crime -- the courts can only impose sentences within the limits set in the legislative statutes.
If you want tougher sentences, lobby your state legislature to change the laws, and mandate tougher sentences.

I don't know how true that is. It seems that whenever we hear about a person being let out of jail after DNA proved him innocent, he already served 15 to 20 years. Of course, there are different types of rape, just like there are different types of murder. So I suppose in depends on the facts of the case.

Not all 'rape' is the same. In fact, up to 1/2 of all 'rape' claims made by women to the police are false. For example, let's say that a woman is dating some guy, they get a bit drunk, and they have sex. But the woman is a bit crazy, and she starts getting upset that she behaved like such a slore.
So she goes to the cops and files a rape report. The poor, innocent dude gets dragged through the legal process.
It would be massively unjust to put him in jail AT ALL, let alone for life.
So, rape sentences are sometimes light because it's not clear if the woman is really being honest.
If women weren't such compulsive liars, this wouldn't be a problem.

I've always wondered the same thing... rapists and child molesters get 5-10 and drug dealers get 20 or more. The system is screwed up!!

I know, it's totally crazy that you can get more time for a simple drug possession than for rape. Our system sucks sometimes.

they can't get over the old "if she hadn't been dressed or acting like that it wouldn't have happened." . The woman had to provoke it some how...... and it really stinks..
