People get hooked on soap operas because they tap into your emotions more than any other format can. When you see the same characters day after day, you get attached to them and want to see how their lives play out. You can relate to them because they're flawed, but at the same time the majority of them struggle to do the right thing. It's that struggle that makes for good storylines.
In fact, that's exactly why soaps are losing so many viewers now. The writing is crap and the characters are not people that an audience can relate to; for the most part, at least on GH (it's the only soap I've watched with any regularity), the main characters are amoral bastards held up as saints. The writers don't seem to grasp that cognitive dissonance, and as a result soaps as a whole have been hemmoraging viewers for years.

for the same reason why I'm hooked on Lost and 24 -- the odds of me being stuck on an island with the likes of a Matthew Fox or being rescued by Keifer Sutherland during a terrorist attack are highly unlikely, but a girl can dream can't she? LOL. Soaps are a fantasy - it gives people (mostly women) a chance to live vicariously through someone else; a chance to see what it's like to be involved in a beautiful woman's love triangle or a sexy man's secret identity without actually doing it themselves.

i think people who get hooked on the soaps because they 1. have nothing else to do at that time 2. don't have cable and there is nothing else to watch 3. have nothing "real" going on in their life and need something else to have some fun in their life 4. like the idea of a fancy world.4. the same reason people get hooked on other shows.

Because there are just all these never-ending storylines and you get sucked into them and just want to know what happens next! Like a lot of tv, it's just an escape from reality and everyone needs that little break now and then. Soaps are so off-the-wall that you don't need to take them seriously. There's something to be said for a little bit off fluff in your life. :)

Same reason peope get hooked on almost any type of TV show, be it soap opera, talk shows, sitcoms, drama, etc...You become interested in the characters and/or storyline and you just HAVE to see what your favourite "people" will be up to that day and what will happen.....

because Soap Operas motivate people's curiosity towards what happen in the next episode. People tend to want to satisfy their curiosity a lot than one thinks.
