This dying stage will occur when the Sun runs out of sufficient Hydrogen Gas to continue the present fusion of hydrogen Gas into Helium Gas.

Temperatures and Pressures are so intense in the central
core of the Sun that the fusion process will continue and use the abundant Helium as the source gas and produce all manner of by-products from that fusion.

The Sun is forecasted to continue in its present fusion processes for another 5 Billion years, and then begin the
consumption of Helium...the dying process.

Actually the sun when die when it runs out of helium. Although it is fusing hydrogen right now, the sun is big enough to start fusing helium once hydrogen runs out. The fusing of helium is what will create the Red Giant stage. I don't think it is big enough to start fusing carbon and oxygen, which is the product of helium fusion.

I believe it is Hydrogen as well as Helium....right now nuclear fusion is creating helium out of hydrogen...when the sun runs out of hydrogen, it will take helium as the fuel...its only when it runs out of helium that it will start expanding into a giant red star that will gobble up mercury, venus, earth and probably even mars.

Hydrogen. Then it will swell into a red giant star as it begins 'burning' helium.

I agree with the above poster. When it runs out of hydrogen.

like all the other stars when its fuel Hydrogen goes low not completely going out! so it begins to inflate and probably you know the rest...
