Why? because they are beautiful and because you can have fresh seeds to feed the bird, squirrels, or yourself. At least, that is why I do it.

Besides the aesthetics of having beautiful sunflowers around the garden, a lot of people grow them because they are one of the fastest and easiest growing plants in the world. A lot of elementary schools have the kids plant them as science projects. Because they grow so fast and so big, the kids get a lot of satisfaction out of being able to grow something so big so quickly.

My daughter plants different varieties of them ranging from small to very tall ones with large heads. Her 4 year old is intrigued with the large ones & it is teaching her about feeding & looking out for wild life as they use them to feed the birds & squirrels in the winter. I really like the looks of them & will be planting them in with my other flowers next spring.

final spring i for my area planted my son's sunflower seedlings(from college project, grown from seeds in pots, then transplanted to floor) via the fence of my outdoors. i for my area doubt the flaws you heard approximately sunflowers' helping the fence because of the fact via mid summer time, they began to fall down (nonetheless alive and blooming) and that i ought to positioned help for them. they actually did not look sturdy and that i'll in no way plant them via my fence back. in spite of the undeniable fact that, i'm at northern California with clay soil. The starting to be situation must be very distinctive from yours. to boot, perhaps there are species of sunflowers that have improved stems. approximately helping and preserving fences, my neighbor mentioned there are some vines/ivy-finding flora that are very efficient. yet he did not bear in recommendations the names. you ought to wanna circulate on the information superhighway and seek some. sturdy success!

Driving by, I once saw a corn field with sunflowers planted on the perimeter only, like a picture frame or a vignette. The question "why" took me into deep thought. When I figured it out, I will not have a garden without sunflowers.
You see, the bees can see the sunflowers from very far away, and when they close in, they see the other flowering plants that need pollinating. Like the corn, or the tomato flowers, or...you get the point.

Some people like the seeds, but others do it to please the birds--they make great bird feeders.
