I was just wondeirng if anyone elses insurance only covers one sonogram? I was kinda upset about it becuase I friend who is pregnant gets to have a sonogram at every doctors checkup and she gets to see how her baby is growing. If I only get one, I would figure that they would probably do it at the end, to make sure the baby is down and ready to go and stuff.

They said that they will cover more sonograms if there is medical need for it, like if the baby is in distress, or i were having a high risk pregnancy. But so far I am not, and I am not hoping for that just so I can see the baby.

Just wondering when they would do the one sonogram that I get. Will I not be able to know what I am having until the very end? Thanks ladies!

Most insurance companies only cover one sonogram around 20 weeks, to check for fetal growth and abnormality. (They can tell if the baby is in the right position without a sonogram at the end of pregnancy). People who get one at every doctor's visit are probably covered because it is just part of their doctor's "package" and it's not considered a separate cost. Most doctors have what they call a "global fee" where they just charge one fee at the very end that covers everything. But if it's done outside your doctor's office, many insurance companies won't cover it unless it's for a medical reason. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology has stated that sonograms are not necessary - therefore, it makes sense that they wouldn't be covered.

They usually do one around 20 weeks. You should be able to tell the sex then. My insurance only covered 1 routine sonogram and then others only if medically necessary. I only had the one sonogram with my son. With my daughter we ended up having 2 because the doctor thought I was measuring big and wanted to check everything out. She was fine.

It really sucks. Most insurance companies however, will only cover the ones that are medically necessary.

I have Aetna...a really good plan too, and I only get that.

I know my first one is covered. But my doc will do one more when I am 4 or 5 months to determine sex, and I am not sure if that one is covered.

Best of Luck to You.!

Most insurance companies are great about most maternity coverage EXCEPT ultrasounds.

If your insurance only covers one sonogram they'll most likely do it between your 18-20 week check up. Believe it or not most insurances only cover one ultrasound, your friend is lucky.

I was able to get 3, but one was given routinely by the doc at 29 weeks. If I were you, I would ask for this for your shower! Ask for an appointment at a 3D ultrasound place. I am sure that your friends and family would be happy to get this for you!

Mine didn't work that way - I had to pay a certain co-pay for my sonograms. Somewhere around $30 for each one - I had two routinely done.

i get to see my baby on every appt.. but i'm paying for the Dr, i would much rather have insurance thou =] so you're the lucky one who doesnt have to pay 1,500 dlls for the dr to see you, 1 ultrasound on every appt is part of the cost i'm sure. i hope you have healthy baby & don't be upset, most girls get to see their babies only once during their pregnancy.
God Bless
