I currently use dial-up to connect to the internet, but I found a good deal for high-speed internet service. What do I need to know before establishing a high-speed internet connection? Other than a modem, what equipment will I need?

just the modem... dsl is like a dial-up connection only faster.. you almost do the exact same thing.. only difference is that instead of a phone jack your going to use a lan jack to connect to your computer... you still need to dial into the dsl connection.. so you still need a username and password to dial in

You need to find out if instalation is free. If there is a deposit. If there is a trial period when you can cancel the service fi you dont like it before the contract starts. You need to find out if there is a early termination fee and how much. You need to have a ethernet modem on your computer and a outside modem from the cable company. Your responsible for the ethernet modem. You also need to make sure your computer meets the qualifications for Dsl or Cable.

It really depends on your DSL provider. Most companies will provide you with all of the equipment that you need, but you may want to ask your provider about that. Other than the modem, you will need to filters for your phone jacks.

Please make sure you have a good antivirus and antispyware on your computer because now that you're on high speed, you are that much more open to threats (because you'll be connected to the internet all the time).

My suggestions are:

grisoft.com--type FREE in the searchbox at the top and download the free version of antispyware

lavasoft.com--download and install the free version.
