A banshee is a Celtic spirit. It is usually a woman. She can be young or old, but is usually dressed in all white, with white flowing hair. She wails or screams as she walks across the countryside. When you see a banshee it means that either you or someone in your family is going to die. The way to avoid death is to not look directly at her.

A spirit, possibly ghost or Fae, who's scream or song signals someone's death. In some stories, the scream/song is just a signal. In some stories, it is the cause of death.

The legends of the banshee originate in Ireland, and the original stories say that only five Irish families can hear the cry of the banshee: the O'Briens, the O'Connors, the O'Gradys, the O'Neills and the Kavanaghs

It is a Irish fairy that is said to warn families of an upcoming death. Everyone was terrified to think a Banshee would visit. It is said she would wail and moan and that is how you knew it was a banshee. It is always said to be a woman and only appears to those with ancient Irish blood.

To be historically correct banshee should be spelled bean sídhe. In Irish Gaelic Bean is Woman, Sidhe is fairies or Woman of the fairies. The Bean Sidhe follow only the oldest of Irish families. She wails a death within the family and claps her hands. The peasants then begin the caoine, the funeral cry that imitates the Bean Sidhe.

When more than one Bean Sidhe appears and they wail and sing in chorus, it is for the death of some holy or great one.
