Taal Volcano, in the Philippines, was originally a huge volcano, that towered 18,000 feet up into the sky. It has been called the smallest active volcano, because it seems small now, but many people don't realize that it is one of the largest volcanoes in the world. It is located about 60-km south of Manila on "volcano island" inside a lake called Taal Lake, or Lake Taal.

As this says, it's not really the smallest -- that honour probably goes to an undersea volcano on the ocean floor somewhere

, it is hard to say what the smallest volcano is. Some say that it is perhaps Paricutin, which erupted between 1943 and 1951 in Mexico. The Paricutin volcano now stands at exactly 1,345 feet above the ground and 9,210 feet above sea level.

Others say it is the Taal Volcano in the Philippines.

The description of this volcano is "a crater within an island within a lake". This is because is it an island in Taal Lake.

The volcano is a 406-meter high crater. At one time, it was larger but collapsed and then the lake formed around what was left of the volcano.

Tagaytay City overlooks the lake and it is believed that it may be part of the crater of the volcano prior to its collapse.

This volcano may also be one of the most active volcanoes around today since it has erupted over 20 times since 1572.
