Well, you need to have a dress with lots of poof.
Shorter sleeves on a dress that poof up almost like a ball. Hard to describe.
AND you MUST have tight curls in your hair, and a MULLET, if not a slight hint at one.
I'd recommend watching the movie pretty in pink or 16 candles(Molly Ringwald), or Working Girl (melanie griffith)
to get an idea of what gals wore back then.
I was in highschool in the 80's...those were the big trends at my school.

Go as one of the kids from fame, get some leggings wear some baggy shorts of a puffy skirt over them, a loose sweater, cut it up in a scoop style, wear a coloured tank top and some converse. Put your hair in a side pony tale with a big colourful scrunchy. =] Have a fun party!

Acouple of movies you might want to watch that might help you out.... 200 Cigarettes, Girls just wanna have fun, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, those have a lot of the style that was worn in the 80's, PLUS they're funny as HELL and you might have some fun watching them!!!

For great ideas, check out videos (not just papa don't preach, but others -- 'Come on Eileen' and ) but also 80's teen movies like 'Pretty in Pink', 'Footloose', 'The Breakfast Club' 'Desparately Seeking Susan' -- You get the idea.
The keys are "Frosty" (like frosted jeans, frosted lipstick) Bright (as in neon) and Big & poofy (Big hair, poofy dress, poofy sleeves, big shoulder pads

Google Madonna and don't forget to wear jean jacket, lace gloves (lots of lace), scrunchie socks or leg warmers. Oh the 80's, so much fun.

For your hair try scrunchies and colorful bobby pins.

Wow. That was my decade! Well, neon coloured shirts and socks, leg warmers, neon coloured hair spray (do strips of hair), off-the-shoulder shirts, big pouffy hair, shoulder pads, pointy-toed 'witch' shoes, short lace trimmed shoe sox, lots of bangles, big plastic earrings (often worn on just one ear), loose hip belts or wide waist belts, and also shirts or blouses with frills!
