The distance the Sun's light has to travel is 93,000,000 Miles.
Light travels at 186,000 Miles per second.
If you do the Math, that works out to roughly 8 Minutes
for the Sun's light to reach Earth.

Cancel three zeros
93,000 / 186 mi per sec = 500 seconds
500 Seconds /60 Seconds per min = 8.333 Minutes

Zah

It takes about 8 minutes for the suns light to reach the earth.
The distance between the earth and the sun is really, really huge. And since light travels at 300000000 m/s, it takes it 8 minutes toreach the earth's surface.

Approximately 9 minutes for light to reach Earth from the sun.

See if the "idiot" at work can do the math. It's 93,000,000 miles to the sun. Light travels at 670,616,629.4 mph

The sun is about 150 million km from the earth. Light travels 0.3 million km in one second. Therefore it will take light from the sun 500(=150/0.3) seconds to reach the earth. 500 seconds is equal to 8 minutes and 20 seconds.

I don't know who you work with, but here's the facts:
Distance from Earth to the sun: 150 gigameters
(a gigameter is a billion meters)
Light travels at 300 million meters per second.
150 billion meters / 300 million m. per sec. = 500 seconds
It takes 500 seconds, or 8 min. 20 sec.
You can use British units if you prefer: 93 million miles
divided by 186,000 miles per second (speed of light)
You still get 500 seconds, or 8 min. 20 sec.

Here's another random fact you can mess with your buddy about. Once emitted by the core, it is estimated that it takes light at least 17,000 years to reach the sun's surface and be released into space. Heres some interesting reading on the sun.
