Oh I agree that all trade with China should be outlawed.

Failing that - any U.S. company that does business with China should be subject to a 1000% import tax.

The Monroe Doctrine declared that no challenge to U.S. dominance would be tolerated in the hemisphere."

The fact the US didn't impose sanctions on the Batista regime has led some scholars to question the true reason for the embargo; according to Noam Chomsky, this was revealed in "a declassified 1964 State Department document [which] declares Fidel Castro to be an intolerable threat because he 'represents a successful defiance of the United States, a negation of our whole hemispheric policy of almost a century and a half,'

Presidential doctrines since then have been in support of the original doctrine. Starting a new doctrine would be rough. Considering what the original one has cost us in world opinion (and $$$$$$$) but I suppose if anyone could do it then Bush could. Something like "no nation shall challenge US dominance anywhere in the world".

Sure, lets shut ourselves off from about 1/4 of the world's population, that makes sense. One of the best things Nixon did was thaw relations with China. We need to press them on human rights, sure, and we should monitor the labor and environmental practices in what we purchase from them, but you can't look at a country of over 2 billion people and say we aren't going to deal with them. Cuba, the embargo there is just a joke. It's a dictatorship, but we deal with lots of dictators. the people that were on the wrong side in the revolution are just sore losers. We need to get over it and try to do something constructive to improve the situation. Embargoing them isn't doing anything.

Cuba is harmless, and was harmless ever since the Cuban Missile Crisis ended. By trading with China we have merely admitted to wasting trillions of dollars during the cold war. Afterall we simply took down an inconvenient communist state in order to sell ourselves to a different since it suits the needs of corporate heads; you couldn't find cohesive logic in that if you drunk.

China has money and a market. Cuba doesn't. Enough said.

The civilized world reestablished relations with Cuba around 1970. (God saved the King!)
