Ok so I am 30 weeks pregnant and I have only had one ultrasound is this normal? I haven’t had any complications during this pregnancy and all my visits I have gotten good reports the only ultrasound I had was around 20 weeks to determine the sex, will there be any more? I would think they would take measurements or something the closer I get to my due date. Right?

Thanks, for all of your help. I’m not worried about receiving another one just that so many people are asking why I haven’t had another one yet. And was wandering if I was even supposed to get another one. Thanks again!

the Dr will do another ultrasound to determine size only if you are measuring big for your dates. I had one at 34 weeks to check the size, but its not a routine procedure.

I had a sonogram at 10 weeks, an ultrasound at 14 weeks, on my 18 week appt I would have had another ultrasound except for the fact that where I live its a tiny town with 3 OB's and a midwife and there were 7 women in labor. I didn't even get to see my regular doctor because she was in the middle of a c section and the doctor that I saw just used a doppler to listen to the little guy's heartbeat. Then at 20 weeks I had a "big" ultrasound. The one where they send you to the imaging and diagnostics clinic to do the big close up good one. The nurse that did the ultrasound there told me that I will probably go back for another "big" one before the baby is born. Some doctors like to do them more than others it seems like. My normal doctor had never used a doppler on me, she just liked to use the ultrasound machine to see the heartbeat going and what not. But the doctor I had the day everything was busy she said she prefered using the doppler. So I think it just varies from doctor to doctor. The only good thing about the doctor I have is I've been getting a ton of pictures of the little guy. About 4/5 a visit and then when I had my "big" ultrasound done at 20 weeks she took 62 different pictures and the clinic put them all on a cd for me. It was great! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy, congrats on the baby and I wish you a safe and healthy delivery!!

That is normal! Some doctors never will do an ultrasound unless you want to know the sex of the baby. The doctor knows by the heartbeat and the size of your belly whether the baby is growing normally or not. Ultrasounds are expensive and most insurance companies won't cover them unless there is a medical need to do one. If you are concerned talk to your doctor, maybe he/she can come up with a medical resaon to give you one, but if not be prepared to pay for it if you want one. I wouldn't worry a bout anything! It sounds like your pregnancy is going great and the doctor isn't worried about anything - that is good news. Just relax and enjoy all the sleep you are getting -that won't last much longer! Good luck to you and your new baby!!!

My doctor only does 2 ultrasounds. Once in the beginning to check the size and make sure my due date is right, and the 20 week ultrasound to check for any defects and whatnot in the baby. After that they usually don't do anymore. I had to have a 3rd with my son when I was overdue to make sure he was ok being so overdue. But they never did another one to see how big the baby was going to be. I asked my doc at 36 weeks how big he thought my baby was, and he felt my stomach and said 7.5-8lbs!! At 36 weeks!! He was out of his mind, my son was 7lbs 14 oz, 10 days overdue.....I swear he just shot out numbers to shut me up...

It varies from Dr to Dr, but my midwife only gives one ultrasound, unless there is something wrong. They couldn't determine the sex at mine, and they still didn't do another one.... As long as everything is going normally, there is no need for more. Good Luck!

When they do the ultra sound to determine the sex usually the also take measurements at the same time. Some doctors will only do 1-2 unless they need to for some other reason.
Ask your doctor how he does it. Because every OBGYN is differant.

i think it depends a lot on your obgyn. if the doc thinks that your baby is bigger than he/she's supposed to be at your point in the pregnancy, then they might do an ultrasound to check the size and see if you will be able to deliver normally or will need a c-section. otherwise, you probablly wont have another one...some hospitals do an ultrasound when you go in for labor tho. i guess it just depends on your doc and on your pregnancy. nothing to worry too much about.
good luck :)

You only need the one ultra sound at 20 weeks. This is not to check for sex as you have said but to check the babies heart, length, size and development. It will check their respiration and organ development, among many other things. Unless there were complications or another problem this is the only ultra sound you will need and recieve.

haha! no! I felt the same way. And felt it 10 times more the first month my baby was here. He is 6 months now and I still dont want another for a whileeeee. Its a big toll on a human body and it shouldnt really happen back to back anyways. :) You also have alot of hormones at the moment, that could explain some emotions and thoughts you have right now..Take care and GOOD LUCK! :)

It means your dr. is assuming everything is OK. Be happy for this. If they figured there was problems they would do more than one to determine what the issue is. They take measurements everytime you see your dr by the outside of your belly with the tape measure.
